Lake Catherine

Reply
My buddy's dad just bought a camp on Lake Catherine. We have never fished the area and are looking for some pointers. I know the train trestles can be productive, but don't really know how to fish them.

Is Lake Catherine itself worth fishing? Totally new to the area...

Any info is appreciated. I don't need super specific spots, but just have no clue where to even start.

Thanks

Lake Catherine sometimes is very good in the spring (March/April) and fall (October/November), not very good in the summer and winter. Concentrate on current lines near the bayou with live shrimp. We've caught a few on lures but live shrimp is much, much better.

Lake Catherine tends to be mostly trout and quite a few bass. Redfish/drum/sheephead are more plentiful in Lake Borgne and surrounding marsh.

Thanks for the responses fellas, much appreciated!

So is Catherine worth fishing at all or just head to the Rigolets?

Again thanks for the advice!

Rigolets may be toughest place to catch fish of all. Fish tend to migrate through it and not feed. But everything has its moment. The train bridge is best on days on slack tide days in the summer. The Pearl River can be great in the Fall if the river is low. Birds sometimes work the west side in Lake P in the fall. In cold snaps Geoghegan's canal can be good (which unfortunately the world knows and will be fishing it).

The best advice is to bring live shrimp, understand the conditions and season to optimize your chances, and be prepared to move a lot until you find them.

I personally have better luck on Lake Borgne's shoreline, the Lake Pontchartrain shoreline, the Wall, and Lake P's bridges...but I have to fish very hard each day to figure it out or stick and move. It's not as easy as fishing Hopedale, Delacroix, etc. 5-10 fish per person is a very good day in most cases, unless it's October-December when the fishing is best. I caught bull reds, slot reds, sheephead, and an easy limit of drum in 2 hours Friday in protected waters in Lake P, then watched a seal on my motor blow out and had to go in....lucky for the fish :)

To answer your question - yes. It is worth it to fish lake Catherine. Especially now through December.
First - I would go burn some gas learning the layout. There are some flats where current moves along well that you can easily pick up specs with love shrimp under a cork. There are also some canals which stretch between lake Catherine and the rigolets that hold trout just along underwater grass lines. Be careful though - some canals are not passable - too shallow. You will learn which you can run (6' deep) and which you cannot (1.5' deep).

Also, there are good areas between pearl river and rigolets that hold trout. Canals and passes. Again - go burn some gas and look around. Find clean moving water and throw live shrimp.

Tressles are good, usually about 1/3 the way from the south shore. For me though, the hang ups and re-ties can get annoying. Lots of underwater structure.

Don't neglect the I-10 bridge when the water is calm enough. Lots to be found just moving around and bouncing bait off the bottom.

Good luck. Now just go out and learn. I tell people all the time that I spent a lot of money on fuel learning how not to fish.
