Hey guys I have a 1976 Johnson 35hp outboard.I am new to working on outboards but not to engines so I dont want to bring it to a shop if I dont have to. I am have trouble with it staying running. I got a new tank, fuel lines, carb kit, etc. but i am still on land. Someone told me its the water pump. Before I spend any more money I wanted to see what yall know. Any help will be deeply appreciated.

water pump? the water pump does not make the engine go, the engine makes the water pump go, maybe he said the fuel pump? water pump is inexpensive and would be good to change if motor has been set up a long time, how long has it sat up? was it running and just stopped? carb could be out of adjustment, jets could be clogged, float could be stuck

you may have a bad reed valve...

I know i was like the water pump? I replaced the parts in the fuel pump and i am getting fuel to the but and in the line that runs under the carb but it float or seed might be the problem still. Yes it has been sitting for some time now maybe 5-15 years in the my barn. It was my grandfathers back in the day. I had it running for 30 minutes if I keep priming it. and with out priming it it would stop after 10 minutes. I put in the river and it was running good but stopped and I had my buddy tow me back.

Is the reed valve in the carb?

reed valve is between the carburetor and the powerhead... another thing you might want to check is to see if your primer bubble is any good. if it runs while priming it but dies shortly after, your bulb might be bad. is the primer bubble new?

Cajun Man, check out this website. I think this is what they should look like. The parts that look like flower peddles are the valve part. If they are not sitting flat or if any part of them are missing it will cause it to run bad.

might be the fuel pump diaphram. Being that old, it is a big possibility. You ill still get some fuel to the engine, but not enough to run good.

Sounds like fuel problem, if you still have quick connect fuel line where fuel line attaches to engine may be sucking air at connection. Best to do away with and hook line directly. If not need to look at bulb and pump closely
