Pirogues and alligators

I was doing some scouting for deer season in my pirogue. I didn't see any, but for some reason began to wonder if anyone has ever heard of a hunter in a pirogue being attacked by an alligator?

I have had them get pretty close to me, but never had a problem or close call.

Yeah Ricky, I have never been bothered either. But, with the weather still so warm I've been seeing a lot of them.

Definitely not a comfortable feeling when they get close to you. I use to run lines in the swamp for choupique. As I would catch them, I would string them up and drag them on the side of the pirogue. Definitely drew a lot attention to myself but they never got too close. Wouldn't be surprised though if something happened to someone. Especially in the Summer time.

Re: Pirogues and alligators
Back in the nineties there was a incident on the Joyce Wildlife management Area when a duck hunter waded out into a pond to pick up his decoys. A nine foot gator lunged at the duck hunter and the hunter was able to put his decoy sack up to shield him from the gator attack. The hunter then got into his pirogue to retrieve his remaining decoys and the gator tried to attack him while he was in his pirogue. The hunter then fired almost a box of steel shot shotgun shells at the gator and was unable to kill the gator but did deter the attack. The hunter then contacted LDWF and the resident trapper for that area. When the agent and trapper arrived at the scene the gator was very aggressive and was killed by the agent with his 45 caliper pistol. I think the trapper actually had to finish the gator off with a knife. With the dramatic increase in the American Alligator population in the state of Louisiana you need to be very vigilante when you are hunting in the fresh water swamps and marshes. As one oldtimer once told me when I was a young man,'when a gator gets 9 foot and above all you are is a meal to him'. This was good advice from a man that lived his whole life in the freshwater marshes of Jefferson and St. Charles Parishes.

back in late 90's my cousin was fishing in back of LOOP in back of Galliano and was passing close to the shore when a gator came off bank and got a hold of his arm he was able to fight off the attack and ended with a few stiches but nothing real bad ,,come to find out later the gator had a nest with babies just inside the shore line , they figured that is what caused her to attack

Been a few attacks from alligators, but I talked to someone about actual deaths from alligators in Louisiana and he had done a lot of research on the subject. Said the only documented death from an alligator in Louisiana was during the Civil War. A Union soldier was being eaten by an alligator. Could have been already dead though?

I had a scare in the fall. Passed over a submerged 12 footer, when he blew out from under me he made a void that sucked my rouge down 3-4 inches nearly sinking me. This gator season we ran into a gator who wanted to swim right up to us, arching his back and threatening. Not cool with a 10 footer. He's boots and belts now though.

I sometimes run our gator lines from our pirogues. They always are trying to get away and seem to have a fear of us. Only time one was aggressive was an 8.5 footer that bit the rail if my pirogue when he only had about 2 ft. of line from my hand as I was trying to shoot him behind the eyes. He could not get away as hard as he tried because he was on a line. Everyone I ever encountered tried to get away, never tried to come at me. Even gators as big as 12 ft. BUT, alway respect them, they are some powerful beast.

As long as no one feeds the dang critters it's not so bad, once they are being fed regularly............ things get sketchier.

this past teal season, i spooked a 6' gator before daybreak by hitting him with my pirogue. the water was shallow and he thrashed about and actually bit the front of my pirogue. he was aggressive but i really unknowingly invaded his space. besides putting some water and mud in my pirogue, he was really not a threat to me. however, as greenhead1 stated, the larger ones sometimes will attack you.
