Atchafalaya Delta WMA

A buddy an I are looking to try something new by making a hunt in the Atchafalaya Delta area. I have a small boat with a 25 hp outboard and a pirogue. I was wondering if we could access the area with this setup and if so, where do I launch from?

If you hunt the Wax Lake Delta, you can dock in the Intracoastal canal next to the carbon black plant or you can dock in Patterson on the Calumet private boat dock off of hwy 90. If you hunting the Main Delta you can dock at the same places and go through the Wax Lake Delta and cut across the bay to get to the Main Delta (be careful sandbars), or you can dock at the public landing on the Atchafalaya River in Berwick. But if you do dock on the river I would advise you run the marsh and come out in Shell Island Pass, because years back I saw a small boat with a 25hp get swamped by a work boat and they had a search crew looking for his body. Be careful and pack like you plan on spending a few nights out there. Its can be a bit tough if you are not experienced with the area. I learned the hard way before they had all the cell phones and GPS technology. Good Luck, and be careful. Your safest bet with that set up would be to stay in the Wax Lake area.

Perfect advice from Wintertime. The 'inside' route is far safer for you when launching from Berwick. Try it for the first time during daylight hours.

The biggest problem with duck hunting these days is that everyone wants to be just like the duck commanders. They were the worst thing to ever happen to duck hunting. Every weekend when I get back to the boat landing coming back from my camp all I see is weekend warriors, they have their face painted with the beard and the over priced camo and their surface drive motors. Man what a joke some of these guys are the sport they just need to get back behind the X box and the computer.

Really leger? I would rather see these kids in the outdoors than in front the TV or computer. I do agree that some need a little education in the outdoors though.

The duck hunting at the Atchafalaya is nothing like it used to be. I took my daughter to the main delta on that hard east, southeast wind and high tide hoping she may get a shot at a Mallard, as I was travelling down east pass towards vice grip pass I did not flush any birds at all, when I entered vice grip the same no birds. No birds the week before Thanksgiving at vice grip pass with all the feed in the world, something is definitely wrong with that guys. I think there is some truth to the rumors we hear about what is going on up north. Made a hunt last week in the Biloxi Marsh, I managed to shoot my limit of greys but it was the least amount of greys I have ever seen in the Biloxi marsh for this time in November.
