What is with the Ads freezing up my computer?

Reply
Recently I have not been able to navigate this website because some video ads on the right side of my screen have been freezing the screen. It has to be the video ad because it continues to play but I cannot scroll. I tried to refresh the screen, which allows me to scroll until the ad loads, then it freezes the screen. Is anyone else having this problem?

Please send screen shots or other info to the help desk link at the bottom of the page. We do our best to block any problem advertisers from our sites.

This stupid little window/Ad/link drives me and I'm sure most people crazy. Anywheres but there would be nice. Most people read from left to right and top to bottom.

Yeah we've never been big fans of that share button either but we had to change when we had problems with their old version. Good news the layout of these pages will be completely different soon without that annoying button.

Good to hear about changes soon. How about adding a button that flags a comment as abusive and should be checked for removal? There is an occasional bad apple.

It also freezes my computer. It actually does it as soon as I get on the site as I am scrolling through the reports.

This also happens to me. Sometimes I have to wait a while, sometime I have to kill the web session and try again. There are probably a lot of scripts running in the background that need to be checked/rewritten. Getting ad revenue is understandable, but not if it makes people use the website less.....kind of defeats the purpose.

Hey guys, I want to take a quick minute to explain how these things happen and how we work to prevent it. We need your help to track these down and here is why:

We use a sophisticated set of tools that allow us to sell our excess ad inventory. Those buyers access that inventory in an auction type environment and bid on groups of impressions from around the internet. We have a strict set of rules about who and what can be advertised on our sites. We also have rules about what types of ads you see. Anytime you see a video ad or an ad that plays sound, those advertisers have broken our rules and gotten around the filters we have in place.

Any information you can provide when you see these ads will help us track down these advertisers and block them. Here are examples:

The products in the ad
The domain the ads are loading from (the bottom bar of your browser might say 'waiting for videoads.com/blahblahetc/.....'
Your Operating system (windows or mac etc)
Your browser (internet explorer or chrome etc)

The more info we have the better able we are to track down the problem ads. We work hard to provide you with high quality content and a great place to discuss the outdoors or buy and sell via our classifieds free of charge. We use this website all day, every day and we will ban every advertiser we find breaking our rules.

I was trying to load an ad in the classified section. Every time I clicked on it this would fill the screen. I did not click any ad or anything like that. It was no accident

The rattling ice was singing a tune of a bad duck season that night. Me and Ole Johnnie black were venting together.

Thanks for updating us. One of our partners had them listed as danger-zone and not fully blocked. They should be blocked from accessing us on any of our partner networks. Please let us know if you see them again.

I'm confused. Why would kid monkey games even be allowed as advertisers and considered pertinent to an outdoors website? Can't you be a little more discriminating, or is this just the new way of things based on google tracking?

I currently also see ads for diapers, hotels, and godaddy. Only one was relevant (I searched hotels today). Harmless enough and if it pays the bills, fine, but I think these advertisers are mostly missing the LAS target audience. And that's also why things go bad sometimes --- no screening for relevance and based on google tracking, so the junk appears.

I'll leave the diaper jokes to someone else.

I might just be a magnet. I do not have a Facebook.

However, since I am a lucky visitor I think LaSportsman should compensate me in some way. T-Shirt, hat, all exspense paid trip to ????? etc...

I'm a computer tech and thought I'd chime in. The ads may or may not be generating from this website. Make sure you get a good malware cleaning utility and update/scan your machine at least once every couple weeks.

I recommend http://www.superantispyware.com/ or https://www.malwarebytes.org/ personally - both have free editions (DON'T CLICK ON THE 'PRO TRIAL') that work fine for manual scans every so often and are 100% free unless you sign up for any trials to their 'always running always scanning pro service'

Viruses were the big thing in the early years of the internet but now it's all Malware. Maliciously coded software that spams you with advertisements so that the people using it can make money off of you 24/7. The software runs hidden and you don't even know your machine is infected as typical Virus Scanners miss it.

If it is in fact ads on this website, there are programs you can install that block all advertisements or allow you to block specific elements of advertisements. However I can't go into detail as this is a free website and they make money from ads to pay the bills. If it is their ads hopefully they can get their web designer to make them less intrusive.
