With my Southfork in the skillful and trusted hands of mechanic,Chuck Evans, decided on nice solo hunt de ole-school way, with rogue seated and giant palmetto branches breaking up outline of'rogue.Met fellow duck hunter and we exchanged spots we intended to hit so as to co-ordinate efforts(too bad that is not the norm, especially late-season hunts and hunting public land-co-operation essential for everyone's chances at cashing in on wary ducks)!Bout ten minutes prior to legal shooting ,hear delicate sounds of two greenwings delicately lighting in dekes and bout 3 minutes later, they moseyed on out and about 20 minutes later, pair buzzed me and dropped one.Not long after pair of mottled ducks decided they liked my spread and the hen was closest to me so she got hammered with 2shots and landed belly up!!Decided needed to call Mom on de cell(always works)and solo hen grey decided she liked looks of spread and she got hit twice, only to soar, bleed out and fall in marsh.Immediately shoved Chapman away from fine palmetto branch blind(ya aint gotta take those nice blinds down, just give yaself big shove and they part)!Bout 5 minutes into search and looking very hard, spot duck #3 and was extremely happy as I have lost too many ducks(had dog but he died many years ago, bout time for another)! Not bad day of solo public land hunting and even got business calls in and Chuck Evans called-boat ready-steering went out and carbs needed work-now dem ducks better watch out!!

Well, what a difference a day makes!Hunted exact same spot today(unfortunately, spooked bunch of ducks again and my experience has been that spooking them hurts chances that day as they do not seem to come back,at least not during legal shooting hours!!).Hunted almost as hard and did not raise gun one time and met 'Mad Hooker' at launch and we exchanged hunting misery!!Probably gonna hit comfortable deer stand Sat and busy with Church event Sun and be back at dem ducks Wed/Th/Sat/Sun to hopefully round out last week.Did have pair of mallards fly by but they were tad out of reach and pair of teal lighted in decoys, again ten minutes prior to legal shooting but these lil guys never returned, unlike yesterday when I got one of a pair.Hope to cash in next week and prepare for turkey season and Honey Island Swamp crawfishing.

MadHook,Think I am gonna be one of de crazies dat braves dis nasty weather tomorrow(out for Sunday)as I hate to miss some of the duckiest weather we have had so far!Hope de sky-busters not out in full force and can't wait to see dat fine big ole black duck mounted in a soaring position, like a nice greenhead I shot about 13 years ago!I would most definitely suggest a pirogue rack for your boat, similar to the one I had custom-built for my Southfork, and the fellow that built mine did an awesome job and with 3 Chapmans(could probably add 4th but hunt with 3 total so 4th rogue would be too many)the center of gravity not affected one bit!

Bayou Bob and I decided for a later launch and we left around 6:30 and counted at least 18 vehicles at the launch and surprisingly,we were able to find a decent spot,or so we thought, too bad the ducks did not like de spot as much as we did.Had 3 greys looking like dey was coming in but there were 2 hunters that were headed back to the launch and they were directly across from us and I did not think these greys would come back and took quick shot and they high-tailed it out, never to return. In retrospect, perhaps this small flock of 3 would have worked but I have seen it all too many times that they see paddling across the pond and flare,so I took my chances and came up empty.Out for tomorrow and may alter work schedule a tad to be able to squeeze in Wed/Th hunts and of course,Sat/Sun,then gearing up for lil vacation and then Turkey Season, followed by hopefully a decent Honey Island Swamp crawfish season.Keeps me extremely busy and I commented to Bayou Bob dat we at least got in very nice aerobic work-out,especially with the load we carry typically(bout 16-18 decoys per hunter, bout 16-18 giant palmetto branches, the other usual hunt gear, etc)!
