FYI: Mississippi hunting license increase for all!

Reply
FYI: For those of you that buy nonresident licenses in Mississippi, the MDWFP wants to raise the RESIDENT hunting license fee a few bucks. Many of the state legislators up there said that they would agree to it only if the non-resident fees were also increased. . That is what looks like is going to happen! It's Mississippi House Bill 1151 if you want to follow it . Good luck!

Every time non residents had an increase there was not an increase in residents. I get all the non resident licenses for $400 plus dollars for 25 years. Enough politics but that's all this is. Raise it and hopefully a large portion on non residents will leave. I have quite a few friends who left Mississippi last year and a bunch more leaving this year. If license increases many more will leave. They need to look at big picture. We buy camps, food, groceries, feed, seeds, gas, chainsaws, four wheelers, go to restaurants. I bought a new tractor with implements and a new truck with it from Mississippi. Raise the license $50 and loose the thousands even tens of thousands we spend each year in your state. Sounds like good politics to me. Will look up author of that bill in case he runs for political office and I can vote. Just my 2 cents.

I haven't see any dollar amount on the nonresident increase. The bill, for now, just says that the resident fees will increase a few dollars contingent on the nonresident fees being increased also.
You would think that the number of nonresident hunters would drop again next year. First, if there is a substantial fee increase, second, since the deer harvest numbers have been decreasing in the hill region, and third, the hunting clubs in the Ms. river bottoms had a very short season due to the flooding this year and years past. We'll see!

Last year 135,000 nonresidents spent $9.2 Million on licenses compared to 339,000 residents spending $6.2 million on license fees. This info. is from the MDWFP's 2015 annual report.

Good luck!

This increase will only lead to less hunters, and less hunters equals less revenue. I feel bad for the young hunters that cant afford to get lic, once kids reach the age to buy lic most quit hunting. This is not good for the future of the sport or the species. I am sure the la lawmakers will respond and charge the ms residents more to fish here and the cycle will continue.

Yep will be a lose lose situation. Only one who wins is politician. Mississippi residents who like to fish our waters are gonna get hammered. The 9 million non residents spend on licenses is probably only about 10% of what they spend in state on hunting not counting the real estate for hunting which is billions. Short term profit over long term benefit and gain. Reduce hunting opportunities for adults which will reduce kids hunting which will kill your income model for the future. Good idea. Ten years from now when they can't pay agents they have they can thank sponsor of this bill.

At least the Mississippi legislature did like Louisiana's and found $577 million to give to corporations! Now they have lots of good public schools and lots of high paying jobs much less fee paying out of staters.

I live in mississippi now but was born, raised and educated in Louisiana. Both states have battled over fishing/hunting licenses for some time. Since so many Louisiana hunters enjoy hunting here and vice versa when it comes to fishing Louisiana waters for Mississippi anglers, you would think they would find a way to make it better for all of us sportsman. I buy my Louisiana fishing license every year since I moved to mississippi ($ 98 give or take a few bucks) and fish louisiana waters about 3-5 times a year. Also duck hunted in Louisiana 2 times this year. Since I am a senior, it doesn't cost me anything to fish and hunt here . I wish the powers that be could find a better solution so both states residents could take advantage of the great fishing and hunting Louisiana and Mississippi have to offer......

I cannot remember the name of the bar H. Lee owned in Elmwood shopping center for the life of me. I remember useless stuff like his little sister China Lee was the first Asian Playboy centerfold. Of course remembering a barrooms name is pretty useless as well.
Yeah the scuffle spilled over to my table and I had to duck and shuffle again. Funny how far people take their offense of being bumped into on a dance floor.

From the Clarion Ledger newspaper in Jackson, Ms. :
On May 12, the MDWFP commission filed a notice with the Secretary of State's office that outlined new prices of several nonresident hunting and fishing licenses. Under the proposal, the nonresident annual small game hunting license was raised from $75 to $95, the nonresident annual freshwater fishing license from $50 to $60, nonresident waterfowl from $15 to $19, and the nonresident seven-day small game license from $30

The action was the result of the passage of House Bill 1151 during the 2016 legislative session. The bill, authored by House Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks Committee chairman Scott Bounds, R-Philadelphia, calls for the first increase in resident hunting and fishing license fees in 23 years. It also stipulates the commission must first increase fees for nonresidents, but stops short of dictating which licenses or dollar amounts.

'We went up 27 percent on nonresidents, which is the same as resident,' commissioner Billy Deviney said. 'It was deliberate.'

No mention of the NR deer license fee. They may be waiting to spring that on you when deer season nears!
I hope Louisiana raises the NR saltwater license fee 27%.

Good luck!!

We should decrease license fee to attach more people to the state. License fees are not paying the bills but if combined with additional spending they will. License is a tax to fish or hunt. Reducing taxes is the key. Policiticans will never figure that out.

I have understood for years that Mississippi residents hunting their own land are not required to purchase any hunting license.
