This is getting old with the spam posts.

Yes it is.
Happens too often. The place is dying from lack of supervision.

Re: WTF
We have a new tool that will be ready in a few days that other admins will be able to remove these more quickly.

We are testing and refining it now with our staff.

Re: WTF
Why don't Sportsman make it you have to be registered for 72 hrs before you can post. Most of the good people are leaving site. This would bring people back. If a person is not a regular he shouldn't have posting priveledges for 72 hours. Would solve 95% of problems and bring quality back to site. Just my 2 cents.

Hmmmmmm
This wouldn't really solve anything. They run a scripted program that produces these post. All they would have to do to bypass your suggestion is to put a delay within the script file. But keep the ideas flowing.

I think the main problems are lack of funding and manpower, skill sets, and the right people do not care about the functionality of the site. They make their money on the magazine. I'm sure the site produces some money through advertising but not like the magazine.

Re: WTF
Ricky Pon is correct, those techniques really don't work. We have some other methods though.

Re: WTF
Trust me. Put a 72 hours ban on new users posting and 99% of them will never return. The message board would eventually dry up!

Fighting spam is an on going never static war. You put in measures and they are held at bay. Eventually more website implement those same measures and the spammers must adapt or they die. Guess what they adapt too.

Re: WTF
Believe it or not these guys actually make money off of the stuff they post on here. It hits their site which counts as a visitor.

A decent start would be banning any IP addresses from outside the US. If someone is hiding an IP then great they shouldn't be doing that. The only thing I'm not sure about would be dynamic IP.

Hint: Start with Nepal and India.

Re: WTF
We do ban countries, they use what is called a proxy server in the USA that they log into. Thanks for the idea though.

Re: WTF
I was 86'd from an online gaming site in my younger days. I would use proxies to get around the banned IP issue until they banned the use of proxies.

I would go ahead and do that. To me if you're using a proxy you are up to no good to start with. The only issue i see is that some people working offshore may use this.
