duncan/parish line canal fishing?

After coming back from la place recently I got interested in bringing the boat out to duncan canal / west lake P area... but my google searching left me a little confused.

First, I found this post on another board about it being dangerous to run through the canal in boats:

Is this accurate?

Also, is fishing under the interstate and the waters between the interstate and the lake generally productive? It looks like it would hold fish, but I never see any boats out there and from looking while in the car and on google maps, it looks like some areas would be incredibly shallow and also filled with many stumps.

It would be nice if the area was good fishing though as its so close from to launching from by the casino.

I've run up and down that canal in a 38 Fountain speed boat at 90+ mph testing doing when the lake was rough. Obviously, we turned around well north of the interstate. I have no idea what the canal is like by the interstate bridge or the little canals that branch off to the west but the main canal close to the lake is plenty deep for a fishing boat.

Thanks for the reply! How long ago was the last time you ran in the canal? I found some more posts about construction leftovers being put into the canal or some under water construction in it that made it hazardous for boats...

That was about 5 years ago, we would test boats there on a fairly regular basis if the lake was rough from a north wind.

I fish and crab in that area often. The canal is about 8-12 ft average near the lake in parishline. The back of parishline near I-10 is a 4-8ft average. Need to be extremely careful to get close to the interstate from parishline because its very shallow and you have to know exactly where to run back there

Thanks for the info. So you never had any issues with debris being dumped in the canal?

The area behind the interstate and all the canals branching off of the parish line is private property. i wouldnt advise you to leave the main canal
