Scouted Red River WMA

Scouted Red River Today (Tues, Dec. 19). I walked 6 1/2 miles through different areas, and found three semi-fresh rubs and one scrape. Five years ago, it seemed like you could bail out of your truck anywhere along the road and find buck sign. What's the freakin' deal here? I was desperately looking for something to get me pumped up for bucks only, but coudn't find it.

Location?
We hunt Red River every year for the bucks only after New Years. We switched to Tensas for the Thanksgiving hunt b/c of the number of hunters. All I can say is hunt the thickest, nastiest places you could find. Either that or the furthest away from the roads/trails. Good luck though, I'll be out there.

The Big Ones are there
I've hunted Red River for two years now and jumped several mighty big wall hangers & a lot of small bucks, but what I noticed is that there are hardly any scrape lines or rubs like @ everywhere else. Even during the rut I didn't see too many scrapes last year, but the bucks were in the area. So just look for the deer tracks and trails and hunt the thickest stuff around, usually i don't have further than a 25 yard shot w/ a rifle in all 360 degrees of me but I see deer!

Numbers are down
way down. It all rols back to how the LDWF want you to shoot all the does and the big bucks will have no choice but move during daylight hours. The make me ill when we get to talking about RR and TR.

the red
i've been hunting the red for about 7 years. and have noticed on the doe days there is not a tree without a hunter in it.evn during black powder season.on top of that we have not been getting the water,or winter. we need, and that has got to hurt the over all population of the deer. we have not been seeing the animals that you have in the past.

I've been hunting red river wma for a long time and I agree.....I think the overall deer population has gone down. When we're at the camp, we usually drive around the whole reserve around 10:00pm and have seen numerous deer. But lately, we might see 5-7 deer. The whole trip is at least 15-20 miles. On the other hand, I'm sure they still have some big bucks in there. Several years ago, I asked a game warden why I rarely find scrapes. He told me that the buck to doe ratio was so out of whack, the bucks had virtually no need to make scrapes, etc. Tell you what, the hog population sure isn't hurting....they are everywhere. I unfortunately killed a huge boar during the Thanksgiving hunt. I'll be there for the muzzle loader season.
