On Saturday, October 15, 2015, Eugene Hoover, Louisiana State Director for High School Bass fishing, put on one of the high school state qualifying bass tournaments. It was held on the Red River Pool #3 Colfax landing. Last year the qualifying tournaments averaged 80 boats. When the gates of the state park open Saturday morning, high school fishermen began pouring in. ' I couldn't believe the number boats that showed up. We were over whelmed. We were scrambling to get boats registered, launched, and parked. My crew helping me were stretched to the limits. We blasted off with 131 boats fishing in da tournament!' Eugene Hoover commented. At the end of the tournament, Cade Fortenberry & Brennon Edmond, Ascension Angler, had 5 fish weighting 15.6 lbs. and biggest bass of 4.2 lbs to take 1st place honors. Other note able fishermen were Hayden Theriot & Luke Cheramie, Hahnville High School, finished 3rd, they finished 3rd at the state tournament on Toledo Bend last year. Also, Dalton Melancon & Andrew Granier , Hahnville High School, finished in 7th place and 4th place at the state tournament last year. Team Champions were Ascension Anglers with Hahnville High school as runner ups. ' If this is an indication of what's to come, I will need more people to work. I hope this will help our proposal with the LHSAA to make Bass fishing a sport in high school this year.' Eugene Hoover said.

The LHSAA needs to make BASS fishing a Varsity sport in Louidiana. Seven state officially recognize Bass fishing as a varsity sport. According to EMILY Hand, Bassmasters National High school division, 45 states have crowned Bass fishing champs in the spring of 2016. I hope the LHSAA takes the lead with Bass fishing as a Varsity sport. Parents need to contact their respective high school principal and urge them to vote YES on making Bass fishing as a Varsity sport. Principal's of high schools are the only one's that can make Bass fishing a sport! This will take place in January 2017.
