How 2 get the smell out of new boots???

Reply

I got me a new pair of hip boots and insulated knee boots for Christmas for deer hunting, but I cannot wear them hunting yet because they have that new boot smell which is horribly strong. I've tried rubbing mud all over them. I tried spraying various kinds of scent spray on them, but nothing seems to be working. I've been dogging out my hunts with cold wet feet all season because all my old boots have holes, but enough is enough. I need a remedy. Who knows the trick???

Wear the boots!
Good God Man. Just wear the boots. It's not going to make a difference. Play the wind and you'll be alright. Rubber boots aren't supposed to leave any scent trail. All this crap you read about or see on T.V. is making some of you not use common sense. You'll go hunting and get wet and cold feet before wearing new boots because of the smell? I guarantee you have a better chance killing a deer with new boots than sitting back at the camp or home because you left early because your feet were cold. Wise up!

I leave new boots outside for a while even if it rains and let them air and dry out on there own.

right on bolo
all this craziness about scent is driving me nuts! I had a deer walk up on me a few weeks ago not 2 minutes after I hung up my phone after my wife called me on the deer stand to ask me to call her when I was done hunting so she could give me a list of things we needed from the grocery!!! I got friends who smoke on their stands, and kill deer every year. It's not that big a deal if you work the wind. You prolly scared away more deer than you would known while you were shivering so bad cuz your feet were wet. LOL

Just wear the boots. It's funny what folks do to be scent free...Mostly spend to MUCH MONEY. I smoke and just hunt the wind. I kill enough deer to feed me for the year. I even have to put my smoke down to shoot sometimes.

forgot to add; if you're ever in Winn Dixie in Laplace and see a guy wearing Lacrosse knee boots, or rolled down hip boots, that would prolly be me, on the ritual "after hunt grocery run cuz the wife didn't wanna leave the house"

How to get the new smell out of rubber.
This is how to get the new smell out of rubber boots. You need to dig a hole in the ground between 2 and 4 feet deep with a 2' circumference. Take the boots and place them in the hole and cover with dirt for 6 days. At the end of the 6th day retrieve the boots from the hole being careful not to poke a hole in the boots while you are doing so. This has the same effect as the boots being worn in the woods for 1 year. Good luck

busted by a buck
thanks for the advice w/ the baking soda. I'll try it out. and if that don't work i'll take the advice and bury my boots. I can smell my hip boots from over 20 feet away. I tried wearing them on a few trips through the swamp and the smell just doesn't go away.

Also, i only had one deer wind me this entire year and that was the only time i wore the stupid hip boots. The six point was @ 35yards almost in bow range. he came unexpectaly from downwind and when he got 2 where i walked in he took off running. that would've been my 1st buck when it happened so all that scent free stuff i do works because i had over 15 deer walk downwind of me this year without any winding me until that smart buck. when hunting public land you have 2 do everything you can not to spook deer. These aren't no stupid lease deer, lol.

also, cold feet or not i hunt all day from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on over 95percent of my hunts.

I truly hope you don't bury your boots!!!!

have fun digging your hole, hope the ground is soft!!

I wonder how exactly someone figured out the exact number of days to leave the boots buried is 6??

Just could not resist.

well, since you owned up to it being a joke, I bet enough time has passed that this cat is now gonna go outside, and dig up his boots hoping no one sees him doing it??

I can hear his wife; "Dan(generic name), why did you dig that huge hole in the back yard?"

Dan; "Well honey, I posted a question about getting the smell out of my new boots on Louisianasportsman.com, and one of the replies said to bury my boots in a 2 foot deep hole for 6 days and that would equal 1 year of wearing them."

Wife; "What kind of formula do they use to determine that?"

Dan; "It's a complex logorhythm combined with the ph of the soil in South Louisiana. Kinda like what that guy on the show 'Numbers' does solving crimes."

Wife; "Well Dan, that makes all the sense in the world to me. If it was on the internet, it's gotta be true!"

Try this, no jokeing
I don't think any type of mud is going to do anything. Get some buck snort, get plenty of it. Smear the gel all over the outside and inside of the boot, get a good thick layer of it on there and then place towels saturated in buck snort around each boot, keep it moiste for a few days, maybe even a week. Then take the towels off and let it air dry outside.
I wear the lace up snake guard boots by magellan and I do this every now and then just to make sure I am not leaving scent where I walk. I Don't hunt deer but I can walk a hog trail and that same night the hogs will travel that same trail, as long as I don't touch anything, and yes these are WMA hogs. I do get strange looks at the coffee shop in the morning the first time I wear them after a fresh treatment and the truck sure smells good too!! Try it, it works, and you won't have to bust a you know what trying to dig a big hole!!

Yep
I don't think you can ever get rubber to smell like anything other than rubber even when it is 10 years old. Like I said, if it bothers you just try your best to cover it up. I do my boot just cause they are not rubber and they will absorb my odor.

When I get new boots I usually hang them between the bed and cab of my truck for a few days. That usually works. And then hit them with cover scent. I wore some boots hunting a few days after i bought them

If you want to get rid of the odor try arman hammer baking soda. Put them in a garbage bag with leaves and close the bag. Leave overnite and the smell will be gone. This method works great for smelly hunting clothes when you don't have a washing machine nearby.

Re: How 2 get the smell out of new boots???
Whatever you do don't listen to the people that say it doesn't matter. I play the wind and go above and beyond when it comes to scent. I had a new pair of muck boots that I wore once and had deer up wind of me stop in their tracks and take off the other way because they could smell the rubber from my tracks walking into the woods. I went back to my leather boots and have deer bedding and feeding down wind of me all the time without ever catching a hint of my scent. If you come up with a solution please let me know because i have tried everything so far.
