The one and only true way to find pogies is to look for the pelicans diving. If you see pelican bombing the water its a sure sign of pogies. Look for the little flicks of water when the pogie splashes the surface and be real quite and toss the net right in the school of them. A heavy net of at least 7 to 8 feet is needed. You can do some good with a small net but it difficult to get a bunch with a small net.
I am proficient with an 8ft net. I can catch pogies in fourchon no problem. Same spot every time before daylight. I'm fairly new to cocodrie and need a good spot near the launches to catch pogies. I get a little nervous about losing my net in a new area as I am unfamiliar with how clean the bottom is. The pogies I catch under the pelicans always seem to be of the magnum variety. I was looking for the 3-5 inch speckle trout sized pogies.
