My Return To Elmers Island 6/9/17

After a 10+ year absence from surf fishing I returned today. Been studying the tides/wind forecast & saw today was to be 3-5 mph NORTH till ~ noon, yesterday was about the same. With a full moon & great tides I entered the water at 6:10 am today.

Later the day went the better the bite once the tide switched to outgoing. We switched over from paddle baits to top water at ~10:00 am (you HATE top water for trout, right?)

I went as a solo trip but quickly made a new friend where we shared baits/equip. Louisiana has a way of doing that. His wife out-fished him while she was in the water, babysitting on shore most of the day.

My limit of 25 kept w/up to 3.5 pounds, average fish was 17-18 inches. Culled from ~ 75 to keep those mentioned. In all my years of fishing Elmers/Grand Isle I have seen the water this clear only twice & today was one of those times. Amazing to see your fish before they hit the Top Dogs in any color as long as it was red or pink.

Good luck, be courteous when you go and make new friends. Life is short. Louisiana is truly blessed.

And, Oh ! God Bless Our President Donald J Trump.

I'm glad to see that you ended up with your limit, Just goes to show you to never give up, patterns change and you find something that works for you. It was my pleasure to share my very unconventional lure of choice to catch my limit. Louisiana is an awesome place to fish as you never know you who will meet, as it's a small world some times.

@Cypressjunky- Thanks for replying, I failed to get your contact info. Have since made up 5 of the lures you showed me and will use them.
Had I left when you did I would have missed the fantastic top water show. You know the conditions, bring a pink or red Top Dog or similar w/you. Suspending twitch baits in red/white worked as well.
It was a pleasure meeting you, and its great to know La. has a young crowd coming up that appreciates our resources .
Hope to see you again.

I've always wanted to try surf fishing on Elmer's Island. Have the day off tomorrow and thinking about going. Any tips for a beginner? Like what I should be looking for in a spot to fish?(not specific spot just general tips). How far out to wade is necessary to catch fish? Also, can you drive on the beach? Thanks for any help/tips you can give.

I went this morning, left the surf at 11:30 am. Not good news but dont let that discourage you .
4 of us went, we ended with ONE TROUT (3 pounds).
The surf was 'Knock You Down' hard , water was muddy/dirty & with water lilies.

We tried every possible bait imaginable but knew it was in vain. The forecast was for 5-10 knot SE wind, 1-2 foot seas.
We encountered 10-15 knots and 3-4 ft seas.

Just a heads up of what we found today.
BUT
If I had the strength in me Id go again tomorrow. Some days you hit it right, others you dont.

For a visual help you can always watch the surf LIVE FEED on the Grand Isle beach - here : https://irgir.click2stream.com/ Note that at 3:00 a.m. this morning this camera showed a flat surf :-(
Mike B. Email me when you can using the link on my account,we need to hook up again. I sent you an email associated w/your account.
