Crabbing

Reply
Going to take my boys crabbing next week before school starts up. Thinking of either running to Rockefeller (Price Lake Road) or Elmer's Island. Anybody hit either one of those areas lately? Any advice/tips? Thanks!

I have heard that Elmer's Island has been providing enough crabs to be considered 'good trips'!!! Let us know how you make out in either location...John Castelluccio, Jr. ps...prefer using turkey necks over chicken necks---my opinion

Went to Elmer's a couple of weeks ago, plenty of fat females, caught about a hamper and could have caught more. There were a couple of throwback though (eggs)

just make sure there is a good tide range, at least 1.0 or better. we went last weekend on a 0.5 and it was dead as can be. Use turkey wings or necks. Grab you some metal shower curtain rings at Walmart. You just stick then into the meat and it won't fall off, as opposed to hooks or trying to tie it off and all that jazz.

I'm not sure if I understand this excerpt from an article on crabbing on this site,

'Elmer?s Island beaches across Caminada Pass from Grand Isle were, in the not too distant past, a recreational crabbing hot spot because of the ability to drive on the beach right to where one wanted to crab.
The area is now publicly owned and managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries as a refuge. While rod-and-reel fishing is allowed and welcomed, recreational crabbing is strictly prohibited on Elmer?s Island.Beach crabbers also should be aware that Louisiana prohibits the possession of glass beverage containers or bottles on Louisiana beaches.'
I would probably contact LaDWL&F just to make sure.
Good luck,
Mudflat

Thanks John, I did not see the older date of this article. Appreciate you picking up on that.

Gonna try Price Lake Rd in Rockefeller Wednesday. Little easier for my boys. Elmers is fun and sounds like some good reports but a little more difficult for the boys. I'll give my report once I return! Thanks!
