We have made our own nets in the past, but be careful as the laws change and are interputed by the wardens diffrently. My dad had to go see the "man in the black dress" due to interptation. I recommend buying them from the factory. Do you commercial or recrectional fish? What bait do you use?

Get some 2" OR 3" PVC pipe and cut it to 3' long. Using a crawfish burner, heat one end enough to bend it shut, leaving small openings on each side. Drill a 1/4" hole on the other ( open end ). Make a trot line with 8 or 10 foot drops every 10 feet. Tie a pipe that has one end bent to each of the drops. You can use poles, tire rims, or anything heavy to weight down each end of the trot line.

**Note** This only works in lakes where a firm to hard sandy bottom exists.

The pipe may need to stay out for two to three weeks before working. They work in early spring into early summer depending on the spring spawn of catfish.

P.S. Don't forget to buy a gear license for pipes and cans from LDWF.
(Larger pipe work as well, but are hard to bend and run due to large fish jumping out at you when you raise them!)

Air conditioner ducts, stove pipe, etc. will work equally as well. You may have to wire on a short piece of re-bar in order to stop the PVC from floating. If you use ducts or metal, you may need to wire the end shut as opposed to bending alone. I almost forgot the most important thing! DON'T LOOK INTO THE PIPE AS IT CLEARS THE SURFACE OF THE WATER. CATFISH WILL JUMP OUT AND HIT YOU!!!! Make sure its out of the water before looking directly into the pipe.

Good luck!

Are you wanting to fish North or South of I-10? If fishing N. of I-10 I suggest using wire nets. This will allow you to buy a rec. wire net lic. which is good for 5 nets, 100 catfish for $20.00. I prefer wire nets because they are low maintance and can be set by boat or by land. See my recent post. This was one day's catch

saw some freon cans (10lb??) used to catch some pretty cats at false river last year.
Didn't get real close up view But it looked like they cut a few small holes around the bottom ring to let water in and either 1 or 2 larger holes below top ring for fish to enter. rope tied to top ring (handle) and hung from pier.
If anyone knows for sure how these are made please let me know. Bob

The quoted area is what we are talking about. Are there any size limits I have to worry about with the traps? Im asking because it says recreational pipes. Is there a comercial pipe?

Freshwater fish and saltwater recreational fish may be taken by means of rod, fishing pole, hook and line, trolling line, handline, bait casting, fly casting apparatus, by use of the devices known as yo-yos or trigger devices, bow and arrow, recreational wire nets and recreational slat traps, recreational hoop nets,
standard spearing equipment used by a diver sport fishing in saltwater or freshwater when submerged in the water, """"""recreational pipes, recreational buckets, recreational drums, recreational cans,"""""""" recreational shrimp trawls and recreational crawfish nets and traps, and by no other means except a barbed or barbless spear used in saltwater for taking flounder. NOTE: Certain species of game fish may not be taken with some gear listed above. Crossbows are not a legal method.

In this instance ,Recreational means for personal use.
As a recreational fisherman you are not allowed to sell or trade your catch. If you want to sell you must have a commercial license.

I believe that there is a 100 fish limit per person
Of these fish 25 may be under the size limit. (I Think the size limit is 12") But check the regs as i could be wrong on the size.
