Fishing Cocodrie for first time. Looking for a few tips

Reply

Hello all. I am looking to go fishing down in cocodrie this Sunday. I plan on putting in at coco's marina. My boat is only a 21 foot bay champ. So I know I can't go in the gulf. But I would like to fish close to it. About how far is it from the marina? Any decent spots? Any ideas or tips to help my trip would be great. If someone is going Sunday also, if you would like to link up at the marina and I follow you, that would be better. Thanks

You'll get some better advice if you tell us what you are wanting to target. Trout? Slot Redrish? Bull Redfish? Flounder? Hardhead catfish?

For bull reds to pull on: Buy several dozen live crabs. Cut them in half right down the middle and soak them in the passes. If nothing there, soak them in the smaller passes leading into the marshes on the northern side of the bays. For trout: good luck. It's transition time, and they are going to be hard to find. Burn gas until you find some good clean water (also good luck) with current and fish live croakers tight lined. The bait boat will most likely be 1/2 mile east of the navigational canal near rock island. Get there early if you want croakers. If the bait boat tells you he has 'offshore croakers' (which is all he's had lately) get shrimp and croakers and see what works best. Sometimes the croakers are just too big this time of year for Cocodrie trout. That said, the shrimp are going to mean removing a lot of pesky catfish from your hooks.

What other kind of fish are hidden in cocodrie?

Try the large platforms in lake barre. Look for birds diving in the bays east of cocodrie or go up to Madison bay and fish points and cuts.

Look for the birds diving in Bay Negresse. I went Labor Day weekend and tore up the specks and white trout.

15-20 mph northeast wind, stay home! You set yourself up for failure. Wait till next weekend when the wind forecast looks more favorable. Look forward to muddy rough water. Go if you must by I don't think trout will be on the menu. You can probably catch reds on market bait though.
