We hunted last week in southeast Kansas. My buddy shot a nice 8 within two hours of getting on the stand for the first evening hunt. (Don't pass up on the first day what you would shoot on the last...)
There was no sign of any rut activity. Bucks were invisible during the day, but camera cards showed nice ones visiting every night. All I saw was does and yearlings up until the last afternoon. I put in 60 hours on the stands in five and a half days. I could smell the skunk getting closer by the minute.
At 5:20 on the last afternoon, after and all-day sit, I had two does come in. One had her tail flipped up flat on her back displaying like an adult film star. I knew something was finally up. A buck busted in and scattered the does. Before it could start the chase, it presented a shot and I took it. I could only see that it had a rack, no time for size judging. It certainly isn't a Kansas giant by any means, but I'll take it.
No matter how close the skunk gets, you just can't quit.
I was hunting with my new Ravin R9 crossbow and that thing is a beast. I had to thread the needle in a small hole between two trees and it was pin-point at 25 yards. I drilled the buck and it went less than 50 yards before dropping cold. This thing is as close to having a rifle in your hands as it gets.
