Public land squirrels or rabbits

I am a disabled veteran that lives in Baton Rouge. It has been years since I have been out in the woods, and want to find someplace relatively nearby that is available to hunt. I don't have a 4 wheeler or anything, so I will be walking it.

I am going to have to wait to try deer or hogs until I get a crossbow, since my spine can't take heavy recoil. If anyone has any tips, I am considering Sherburne and Maurepas.

Both places have squirrels. Maurepaus has more squirrels, but the terrain is swamp that will require hip boots. You will also need a boat to get to most of this management area. Sherburne is accessible by car and is easy walking. There are squirrels, but they are harder to find and kill.

Meant to chime in a few weeks back but got too busy and wanted to send along mu suggestion for Pearl River WMA,just try a mid-week hunt when the pressure is lot less.I like walking the numerous sloughs and typically emerge with a handful of fat tree rats!!Ya never know when ya might spook a deer or small herd of hogs, though certainly by now those wary critters pretty much nocturnal.Sometimes, staying later than the average Joe yields a chance at in-suspecting tree rat or two!!

I second Pearl River. The walking is not too bad and there are plenty squirrels
