ALL LOUISIANA DUCK HUNTERS PLEASE READ!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply
First off i hope everyone had a good last weekend hunt. I wanted to let all of you know, i just spoke with Larry Reynolds on the phone for a good long while. The first thirty minutes, i am pretty sure we spoke in french alot!!!! lol . Man is always going to disagree that's life. Its the over coming your Disagreement and finding a solution to the problem is what can make things better. Not saying that me and Larry still dont disagree on certain issues, but there is a huge agreement that every hunter on my post and that me and Larry are 100% on board with. We have to fix Louisiana's Habitat. The State cannot do it and does not have the resources to tackle the task alone. I also spoke with the president of once was the Louisiana Waterfowl alliance and sadly the group had shut down just a few weeks ago. We need a voice for all Louisiana duck hunters, one that can disagree and stand up for the hunters and work through problems along with the state. Not saying the state doesnt listen to Boudreaux and Thibedeaux from down the street but, They will have listen to an organization that represents thousands of Louisiana Duck hunters. I am going to get our organization non profit started. I do not want it to turn out like the alliance that had to shut down because they did not have members or resources backing them. This is going to be a whole state effort. I told Mr Larry we are going to start this and asked if he is willing to stand with us and help us with getting the states habitat restored,he replied 100%. I am willing to give it a shot and work along side the state and give them assistance in whatever we need for habitats to be restored. That is going to be the main goal of this organization. It will be real hunters rebuilding there own habitats. I researched more into The critical wintering grounds funding that the states to the north have been utilizing. We have to get more people involved in doing that here in our state. The funding is there for the taking we just have to get land owners to apply for it. We have to make changes to raise money and get funding to rebuild or wma's and refuges. After we get the habitats in Louisiana on the right path or have a good idea for the future then we can move on other issues and everyone will get a chance to give there opinions and they will be respected . It will then be voted on and everyone will vote, not just a board or or leadership. EVERY MEMBER IN THE ORGANIZATION !!!!!!!! WILL VOTE!!!!!!!!! The state was starting sometthing like this years ago and even funded it but, never really took off. With that being said we have to hit the ground running when we start and try to show the state we do care and who knows what the outcome will be but anything is better than where we are now. I need to know if all of you are willing to commit to this ? and to commit to making Louisiana great again? If you are , then tell everybody you know about this post and just a simple yes will do on a comment!!!!!!!!!!!????????. The more that respond will assure me that myself and the people already committed to this are not wasting there time by moving forward with this. Please give me your responses quickly. Thank you all. if you have anything you want to add to this please email me with your thoughts so we dont tie this post up with anything other than Louisiana hunters responding to the commitment.

I'm in.
I would also say allowing a natural migration for waterfowl should also be part of the focus. But yes, it will be much easier to gain funding and gov support by starting with improving LA habitats.

I think I'm in. Perhaps it's time for a mission statement.

It's a little concerning that it seems the discussion has changed from wanting to deal with the situation north of us, to wanting to rehabilitate our own habitat, much of which needs no such rehabilitation. If 50,000 gadwalls are playing patty cake in a Missouri refuge throughout the winter, it wont matter how much wigeon grass is in your pond. And on that note, I know the area I hunt (which is vast) has incredible habitat. The subaquatic veg is so thick you can hardly paddle, and yet, each year there are less birds, and each year is colder than the last.

So I am glad you talked with Larry, but hopefully we can still keep the ag practices north of us in mind with this organization.

Just a quick reminder, Trying not to turn this post into anything but a simple answer so i can keep up with the numbers wanting to join. That is why i put my personal cell phone and email up for anyone who might question anything to please contact me and i will be more than happy to answer anything in my power.
I am going to run down to my CPA today in DeRidder to take care of my taxes and to get with him on the non profit. I have not released a name of the organization or the missions statement. The name will be depending on if someone has ever filed anything with it. I have 2 that i am set on, that i feel is respectable and represents Louisiana well. I will release it as soon as i know for sure that it is available. The Missions statement, I really feel that this should be decided by the organization as a whole. I am not a already established organization, I am not trying to sell you a missions statement to join. Any of you that read my original post knows my opinion on our problem. Not everyone agrees with it and i would never try to force anything on anyone. One thing that we all agree on is the habitat in our state is suffering and we need more habitats that will not only attract but be able to sustain them while there here. That will be in the missions statement. The fact is we have to prove that we do have a problem regardless of the numbers and that we are working together to fix it. Once we are on the right path with fixing the habitat, then we have a leg to stand on, if it comes to having to fight. push paddle bang bang please give me a call so i can personally speak with you. I think you will agree with what i have to say. seems like your thoughts are like mine.
Guys all im asking for with this, is a yes if you are interested in trying to create a organization to help with our problems in our state. I am not asking for money or anything else right now. When it reaches the point hopefully very soon that everything is in order and we can maybe meet in different areas of the state for us to discuss issues and vote on certain issues and we decide as a organization whole what the yearly dues will be, we will all vote on it. I want everyone to feel like that have a say in this. hopefully we will be large enough to have different area chapters and assign area directors one day but for now it is just me and a handful of the originals that i am going to be calling on here shortly. After that if you feel like this is not for you, then you can step out no strings attached no money lost, you will have just lost a little bit of your time. again please post a yes i need your help and louisiana needs your help. there are a ton of views on this already i have received tons of emails just wish the yes's would reach the numbers on my original post. Again thank you all and please contact me instead of writing on this post. my number is 337-375-6853.

That's defintely a good point pushpaddlebangbang............There are areas with some great habitat but plenty needs to be restored. Numerous WMAs have waterfowl areas that are closed because the habitat is dying, levees need work, pumps don;t work etc. I think the FEDS feel like our habitat is fading away and won't address the issues north of us, they just use our lacking habitat as an excuse. If there's funds available to fix Louisiana's habitat that's a plus then we can tackle the issue that we know are keeping ducks from migrating

Took a buddy to one of my favorite NShore Marsh 'honey-holes' and he was simply astounded at the quality of the habitat, grass to the surface,so much grass that it was a chore to paddle through and guess what-we saw about a total of 3 ducks, including the flock of about 30 Dos Gris that were paddling all around dat fine grass-filled pond.Jgoins1981,keep dat ball rolling, this fellow hunted Arkansas recently and he and I were hoping to ambush a greenhead or two and saw exactly zero mallards where just few hunts ago, there were plenty-hope they did 'reverse migrate' and dat would be about typical!!!

Good news guys, I did speak with my CPA and he is going to start working on everything for us. I have even better news than that ...............
I have been waiting on a friend of mine to call me about this since day one. He is a very busy man and was waiting to see that we are finally moving forward. Brian Leech Senior Regional Manager for Delta Waterfowl for Louisiana and Southern Mississippi. It was great finally getting to speak to him about what I am trying to do and let him know how amazing the Louisiana waterfowlers have been in agreeing to having our own organization to stand up for our state. He was happy to hear that our state is going to have a organization. We discussed my thoughts and what direction i am headed in. He was excited, we both remember how Louisiana once was as boys. We want that for our children too. That is why his choice was to work with something he loved so much. That is why my choice is to start this organization. He also said he cannot give us an answer on being an affiliate of Delta until we are organized and have our missions statement together. He liked the ideas so if our missions statement stays close to those it shouldnt be a problem joining forces with Delta. Maybe that will help some of you make your choice a little bit easier. Thank all of you so much. Keep the yes's coming . This is going to be for our state and our state only guys. I am just trying to make this sport that all of us love and the habitats better. We have to have a voice to stand up for Louisiana's hunters, not only to LDWF about issues we face but to the Government and the flyway in a whole. Tell every call blowing, mud boat running, gun barrel smoking, Louisiana Duck hunter you can about this post and the organization that might just be the gas to light the fire this state needs. Just be patient with me the first steps are always the hardest . thanks

Jgoins1981 and I have spoken several times over the past couple of days about this. We both want the same thing that I would imagine most La Duck hunters want. There is no doubt that there are other things going on that is effecting the natural migration of ducks to Louisiana. We want to move forward with this. However, we will not be able to do anything without the support of every single waterfowl enthusiast in this great state. If you have any questions about what is going on here just text or call him. I called him and he almost immediately called me back. This is the start of something greater than ourselves. Every response to to this thread makes this movement more powerful. Lets make it happen!!!

Guys,Just re-read my last post on this thread and I meant to say I hoped dem NShore mallards did NOT reverse migrate!!Got e-mail from young gent looking for fresh/salt water fishing podna and he sent me e-mail showing quite a carnage on beautiful greenheads,a drake pintail and drake mottled duck and most likely these ducks came from Joyce WMA so perhaps dem NShore greenies 'reverse-migrated ' to Joyce WMA and dat would be about my rotten luck.Holding out hope ole Mommie Nature treats Nuck,Futz,Gerard like a decent dear Mommie and lets her boyz shoot some NShore ducks tomorrow but not gonna risk it if torrential downpours and thunderstorms cranking up!!Sunday gonna be it for Nuck and Futz and been incredibly weak and frustrating season and they are getting progressively worse, not much hope for Sunday.Ony hope to get de ole Beretta raised at least once, even if at stinking Dos Gris!!!Amen,J goins1981,keep dat train a-running!!

Mandevillian, just did nice spending spree at Denham Springs Bass Pro and almost goofed and bought incredibly realistic Avian X Gadwall decoys-aint got many gadwalls to try to fool!!!Fishing can't get here soon enough!!

You definitely have the support of all Avoyelles parish public land duck hunters. We’re ready for a change and will back you 100%. Our waterfowl community here feels the same way you do. Another issue we need to tackle is the shell per hunter limit. 15 shells per person per day. To many young kids crippling good ducks sky busting because they can carry too many shells. We want to see a change there because it’s not fair to the ducks and it’s not fair to the other hunters

SJmoulard. I appreiciate the support of your area and we will discuss that issue more at one of the first meeting. I know we could regulate that on WMA's and Refuges but there would be no way of doing it on a state wide scale for private lands. We could ask the private hunters to support it but with so much land to cover and so many hunters on private properties the state could not regulate it. if you would like to continue this conversation please email me or give me a call i am not busy this weekend just trying to get stuff together for our organization. That way we can keep this post from becoming a discussion or debate lol.

Push paddle is spot on! Unless you are going to address the practice of legally being able to minipulate standing crops for the sole purpose of hunting by flooding and using ice depletion systems this organization is a lost cause. Mr. Reynolds always preaches habitat loss as one of the factors and other than the Maurpas Swamp, south of Bayou St Dennis, some parts of lower Lafourche and Terrbinne parish our habitat is better than it was in the 1970ies! If you want this to work you need to challenge the hunting methods used north of us by proving that what their doing up there is a violation of the Migratory Burd Treaty act by hunting over a baited field by manipulation of standing crops! The hunting practices up north are the main reason the puddle ducks are not migrating south anymore, perfect example the divers migrated to Louisiana this year because they are not effected by flooded grain fields and Ice depletion systems. This was the least amount of puddle ducks I have seen in Louisiana in my 47 years of duck hunting,

I can tentatively say yes, I will support an organization focused on La. I would have to attend a meeting or hear more one on one to really commit. 'Habitat' is casting a very broad net. I am relatively new to La and hunt public land exclusively. Having hunted here two seasons now there is a very clear line dividing those who hunt public and private land. That's not to say one is better than the other or one is right and one is wrong, just some very different ideology. I question if there is sustainable financial support to do this long term, particularly if next year just happens to be better. Whether or not crop manipulation in the midwest and people using ice eaters has altered the migration or what constitutes 'prime habitat' will always be debatable. What is not debatable is that generally speaking our ducks follow the Mississippi and it's tributaries down. If there are extremely dry conditions (Arkansas, Northern and Central La this year) along the river, a naturally occurring shift (even marginally) in the jet stream, etc. there will be an impact on the numbers of ducks that migrate here. My personality is to only do things 100% so I am skeptical of putting time, effort, and money in to an endeavor that may lose support in 8 or 10 months if we have birds here during teal season or people kill limits in the first split this fall.

I apologize for answering longer than 'yes'. I'm a strong maybe with an interest to learn more.

Taken directly from 50CFR, definition of a normal agricultural operation is a normal agricultural planting, harvesting, post harvest manipulation or agricultural practice that is conducted in accordance with official recommendations of the State Extension Specialists of the Cooperative Extension Service of the US Department of Agriculture. I don't think the USDA would call a cornfiled with a levee built around and flooded soley for the purpose of hunting waterfowl to be considered a normal agricultural operation. This is where you are going to have to take the fight if you ever want to see duck hunting in our state ever return to what it once was. It's normal to bring water to rice but not normal what they are doing up north. I am with you on this issue 100 percent.

For whatever it is worth,Bayoubob has hunted at least twice as long as me and he said this was perhaps the least amount of greys he has seen in quite some time and I have detailed hunt logs, hunt about exclusively 100% Federal Land(Big Branch)and I personally saw far fewer greys and kinda believe we had a serious 'reverse migration' of all desirable species and the ever-present Dos Gris and always safe with us as we rarely shoot one for lotta reasons, chief being I do not like the way I have to doctor em up just to try to make em edible.Just a week ago, with fairly similar conditions,me and a hunting die-hard had quite a few fine mallards decoying and we ended up taking 4 and lost a fine greenie and today we were lucky to see ducks, what we saw were probably the ones that did not 'reverse migrate'stinking Dos Gris!!Got one more day to try my best to get on some green and I saw a decent report from a fellow who shot a 4-man limit, mostly teal, awesome job!!We used to have some incredibly productive hunts where ducks wanted to be and where they pretty much stayed the entire Second Split.Gonna be interesting to see what de Marsh gonna carry once the shooting stops and I know some folks incorrectly figure we should extend our season since after tomorrow, ducks a-plenty but that is only because they wisen up quickly, wait til de pressure is off and a short paddle down de non-motorized Pipeline will astound folks.I will post Season Recap and have two great solo-limits hunts under my belt, the rest some good, some incredibly weak, some I did not fire my gun!!Might be some serious 'reverse migration' going on and in an un-natural manner, especially if crop manipulation de culprit!

Josh,First of all, thanks for taking the time to personally chat with me this am,sorry we had to cut our conversation a tad shorter than I wanted to but was meeting a fellow who has tons of connections and he and I had real good chance to converse as we crossed de Causeway on our way to Puglia's in Metairie to pic up his new toy, fine rolled-gunwale Bayou Specialties one-man rogue!!He hunted Arkansas this past season has some fine trophies being mounted and his Arkansas buddies griping about Missouri being the 'new Arkansas' so plenty of folks ripe for an organization like ya working so hard on!!!This fella so hooked on quack dat he willing to sell pristine Infinity Q80 luxury SUV to get possibly equally fine luxury Toyota Tundra Crew Cab PU so we can haul not only pirogues for paddle-in hunts but also to replace his current fine tow vehicle and I keep trying my best to sell him on Toyota vs domestics like Ford,Chevy,GMC!!Think re-sale on Toyota infinitely better than domestics and know lotta folks with Toys and de love em!!!Let me know what assistance ya need and where I hunt the habitat is incredible, just need no more 'reverse migrations' and will text ya pics of ducks I see on Big Branch trips next few weeks-bet ya bottom dollar where dem 'ice-eaters' up North no longer working, why would they as seasons closed, bunch of fine greenies gonna get their pictures taken by de ole Mandevillian, giving us ammunition!!!Probably gonna see bunch of resident ducks like mottled ducks but bet the greys that we did not get are gonna 'mysteriously' start getting their pics taken as well and I do realize hunting pressure will be off but facts will be facts, turning off dem 'ice-eaters' up N gonna finally give us a true migration,my personal and humble 0.02!!

Flyway Federation of Louisiana

Alright guys its legal and I have set up my email for the all new non profit organization. The website is being built as we speak. It will have a chat room.
So from here on out use this email . if everyone could send an email to this address below so I can start adding all of you to my contacts list just put your name and cell number and you don't have to put your address but a town name would help or southeast southwest central you get my point so when I set the meetings up I make sure that I am involving everyone in there areas. I am going to come to each area in the near future. We will have a meeting to discuss memberships and the future of the organization. If you would be interested In being one of the area Leaders please put that in your email. I could really use some help with that. Thank you all.

Awesomejob, just like we talked about and I plan to shoot texts to my Duck Mafia and funny story ya told me bout dat fellow from Alabama who owns land in LA,probably do not personally know him but get him aboard. My wife reminded me that we have some clients that own some prime land in Venice, bet they would love to have a natural migration like they used to have.Gonna send ya private e-mail and personally want to thank you for the hard work and determination to get this organization up and running!!Can't wait to finally get a chance to meet ya and I plan to be as active as I possibly can be and will do my level best to get folks aboard.I belong to the NShore Chapter of Delta Waterfowl and have sent quite a few fine hunt pics to my buddies with me in Delta and what they probably do not realize is we are shooting maybe a tenth of the ducks that used to be so prevalent in all the NShore Marshes. My wing-man,Nick(Nuck,Bayoubob,etc)was never with me in past years when we slammed greys in Big Branch and getting maybe 18-20 greys per season is a fraction of what we routinely used to shoot and we NEVER shot Dos Gris, with the possible exception of the last day and only a few at most.Had I targeted them dogs, coulda upped the harvest considerably buy why!!!Thanks, brother from another mother, let's roll!!!

Just a quick Reminder If you have not sent me an email to my new email for the federation. I would really appreciate if you could help me out and do that. Once a email is sent to that one, the program takes care of the rest for saving the contacts. Also if i havent spoken with you personally, I would like to thank each and every one of you, personally for helping this get going. It isnt going to be much longer on our own area where you all can communicate on our website. One of the original guys that has been a huge help with this Is coming in from offshore soon and hopefully while he is home we will be able to do some meet and greets. He will be a asset to the guys in Laffayette area. I had never met this guy before in mylife but just like me, He knew something had to be done. That goes for a few more too. These guys have never met one another it is just amazing. The numbers that have called and emailed and responded are crazy! its amazing! If you might be interested in Helping the Federation and me out by being apart of leadership for the area closest to you on the map be sure to list that in your email.

Josh,This aint a big deal but folks around where I live(Mandeville)affectionately call our area the North Shore and the New Orleans area is the South Shore.SE for the New Orleans area sounds fine and I like North Shore for the area where I hunt and live, just a suggestion.Going to lunch with a buddy tomorrow, was supposed to spend some time in Lafayette tomorrow but schedules made to be broken and looks like mine got broken!!Hoping to spend some quality time paddling Big Branch Marsh real soon and might take buddy who just re-introduced himself into our awesome sport after about a 30 year break and his buddy that has property in W.Memphis,AR called Missouri the 'new Arkansas' if dat tells ya something!!!Sad when migratory patterns have been altered and we keep getting lotta bs about it!!Something had to give and looks like FFL will address problems that have been festering for quite some years, probably at least 15 years or so!!Wished I coulda fished a tad longer today but I do quite a bit of paddling to keep in shape and it was quite windy today on beloved Cane Bayou!!Talk to ya soon and maybe when I make my trip to Lafayette, will see if you and I can get together!!

I like the idea for the different chapters. Not sure if you thought about boundaries yet, but I think the 3 southern chapters should all be south of hwy 90 so they stay in the coastal zone. The other chapters should also be set up to where no chapter is in more than 1 duck hunting zone. Does this make sense?
Reply
I understand, it is fully up to you guys what your chapter is called just dont name it the flying pink bunnies or something like that lol!. I dont know your area and dont know how you want to set it up.
I know the other part of the state but I am still leaving that up to you all on the specific city to meet and how you want to do it. That is why i didnt post any exact cities.
The reason i put the areas like they were is to give you guys the opportunity to voice your opinions on this.

The way i centralized the locations. I utilized google earth . Laid out a mileage grid also took into account traffic and bridges, no one will have further than a 45 min to hour drive for events or meetings.I am open for any thoughts are comments on this.
This is how i will be setting up the town hall meetings. If a area would like to help organize there chapters like they want i have no problem. That is what the Federation is for. We have One goal and that is to better our state. I dont care if you guys want more chapters our less. Whatever makes it easier on you all.
The way it is laid, will be how i travel to recruit very soon. thanks jcall and mandaville

Yes but the first time I hear that more refuges or returning rest areas to WMA’s is part of the solution I’m out.
Reply
I can promise you this much green chaser, I think everyone agrees with you on that one bud. I received a call yesterday that told me about something that had been done in his area. I had no clue and i hunted that area 2 times this year. We need birds to be able to rest but not like they are doing it.
It is ridiculous how land Management has gotten so hard. I think the reason for this is budget. Funny thing is, they steady cut a budget on state land. WMA's and Refuges suffering but, CRP, and WRP programs on private lands seems to be booming! even though there budget is suppose to be cut. Even if the govt cuts it down to what they originally wanted. It doesnt come close to all the cut backs the have done on state and federal projects.
Then what is the worst about them releasing the contract. According to how much acres the release, it really puts all that land in a position for them to do whatever they want to with the conservation area. The it is back in the farmers possession and is not a managed conservation area. So now we got a conservation built by the govt on land that had been purchased with no intent to ever farm. that once out of contract can not only plant this hottest thing on the block but the can do it in the middle of the private conservation area and it is 100% legal.

Yep and they are all over the internet now. You all that have been following, know how much searching all of us did at one point.
You all know it would have been posted.
I knew they could block media content from other countries, but to block in your own country by region.
Why would that be done. Why hasn’t one media station contacted me or the FFL?
Has the page that we are writing on as we read and type this, overlooked this.
Pretty hard to over look “my opinion on ducks”
I think someone had said at one point it was the largest post and most comments ever put on the sportsman.
To my knowledge they allow us to speak on here, but who is stopping them from picking up the story?
From what I can tell we are talking about a sport that this state was named after and this site utilized that name as the title.
These two post are full of good ideas and comments by Louisiana sportsman. Why would they not contact me ?
My number is in the post a dozen times. My email, my Flyway Federation email, and it would be a great story.
Heck if I’m wrong and they can interview me and prove me wrong then I would be content with killing scaulp and not the hundreds of thousands of greys and mallards I have filmed as of 2 weeks after season to this point!
My guess is chubby cheeks and his band of currupt misfits has the microphones, keyboards, and cellphones unplugged and blocked.
It seems I have learned to much by the threatening emails, all electronic devices hacked and stolen emails that a example will be made.
Not one Louisiana rep, has the sack of groceries to stand up and fight with me by blasting this all over the media. Knowing that this could make them the most popular reporter in the USA and hey if I’m wrong then I’m a quak !!!!
Meat up what this world has come to. Report the real dang knees to the people, don’t nobody want to hear about the local fart contest they are having at the civic center tomorrow!!!!!
Respect your state, sport, traditions, heritage, but most of all respect the migration! This is only hurting the birds!

That video pissed me off. If I would have watched it before the season started I wouldn't have bought his decoys (avian-x).

pushpaddlebangbang nailed it: 'our own habitat, much of which needs no such rehabilitation.'...EXACTLY! Many of us who've hunted across coastal southeast La. (from Manchac through la Branche, to Delacroix, Biloxi Marsh to Pass-A-Loutre) for 40 years + HAVE NEVER SEEN the habitat in BETTER shape--but populated by so few ducks and (barring a midwest drought) getting steadily worse worse yearly....

Personally I think the wild habitat is just fine other than the annoying salvinia and water hyacinth. The problem is more likely that agriculture in Louisiana has changed from rice to pure crawfish and sugarcane following the money. The rice mills in places like Abbeville which were once big business, closed up shop because there were not enough people farming rice any more. Meanwhile, places like Arkansas have been planting more rice and with the exception of last year, the winters have been so warm that more days than not we are better off fishing. You can fix up WMA's all you want, the ducks will not stay there when there is a cajun with a gun every 100 yards (rules may say 150 but it never seems to stop em from setting up on top of you). The ducks will either go back up north if it is warm enough, or if not they will go sit out in the gulf until sunset (and we are required to stop hunting half an hour before they fly in the evening).

The waterfowl management of this state is best evidenced by the state's 'duck stamp'. It is embarrassing to say the least. Top that off by considering what the state did with International Paper's dioxin pit, namely Wham Brake. There is much room for improvement and it starts at the ballot box.

So what is the status on the Flyway Federation? Is it taking members? Has any state representatives gotten onboard?
I hear there is a Facebook page that gets heated at times, but I am not on Facebook.
