Grand Isle in March

Reply

Will be on Grand Isle in mid March. What surf/bank fishing opportunities are there at that time of year? Would like to catch some specks, thinking hwy1. Wanting to catch some bigger fish, like bull reds, sharks, etc. Thinking Elmers Island side of Caminada pass but have never fished there. Can you access that end of the Elmers by truck or side by side? Any info about these ideas or any other ideas are appreciated. Thanks Luke

AS OF LAST YEAR: The Elmer's Island vehicular road (from Hwy.1) stops just before the Gulf --- about 1/4 mile. This is the only designated parking area and from there you have to 'haul/walk' your gear to where ever you want to setup. FROM that parking-area to the actual turn of Elmer's Island towards the bridge/Caminada Pass is approx. 1.72 MILES! NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES OF ANY KIND ARE ALLOWED PAST THAT PARKING AREA! Bull drum make a run in March at the Caminada bridge. Trout fishing often tough. Reds are possible along HWY 1. The crabs usually start biting in March unless its too cold.

The beach on Elmer's Island next to the pass is a great spot for bull reds. At times it will give up some sharks also. This video was filmed there on methods for catching bull reds from the beach:

Depending on your physical situation, it is probably worth the hike from the parking area. Or you can launch a kayak from Bridgeside and kayak across. Take care to watch the tides and weather. When the tide really rips, kayaking can be tricky.
