I use 1/0 Khale hooks. You can go to a 2/0, but I prefer the smaller hook on shrimp. Forget treble hooks, I hate them. One trick for Khale hooks is to not set the hook. Forget you ever saw a Bill Dance hook set. A khale hook will work a lot like a circle hook and when jerked hard will pop right out the fishes mouth without hooking it. Just reel fast to take up slack and get some pressure on the fish and the hook will turn and bury it's self.

I use a #4 red treble for a cork or a #2 Khale for Carolina Rig. Before having a boat of my own I took about 40 guided trips and found these to be the most commonly used among the guides. The treble can be a little trouble if you have to net the fish, but I find that usually at least 2 of the 3 hooks are buried in the fishes mouth, you get an extremely high ratio of strikes to hookups and rarely have the fish throw the hook when giving you a head shake. Plus, the smaller size makes it easy for the fish to eat and harder for it to be noticed. I recommend the gamagatzu shiner #2 for the khale hook and the mustad red #4 for the treble. Those two are all I used this weekend and I only missed one strike all day and lost ZERO fish once they were hooked.

PS Some guides don’t like treble hooks because of the net issue and because it triples the number of flying hooks with clients, who they rarely have any knowledge of their fishing experience level, which is understandable. Capt is right about not setting the hook hard with the khale or on Trout in general.

4/0 khale hook. Find the treble on the smaller fish seem to tear them up. Hook ups with khale hooks are just about as good as treble. JMO

3/0 khale hook........... easier to remove, never misses and it gets h ooked up on debris a lot less. plus it's easier on the undersized fish

So the consensus is.... Thanks, as a green live shrimp fisherman/woman in Grand Isle today no fish were caught by wifie withsmall kahle and myself with small treble. Beach fishing was not possible with the wind rolling the breakers. Elmers Island was the same. Dock would not buy back the last 24 live @ 50% off. Just joking for you with no sense of humor... but a very beautiful day with cool temps and bright skies.

Not a big live bait guy but on those times when I do break down and plunk down some coin for livies, hard to beat kahle or small treble, some folks swear by 4x bronze,I like stainless personally, especially for soft mouthed fish like specks, hard to beat Gamakatsu trebles and yes they can be a royal pain to extract, especially from smaller specks, want to get Wifey on some nice specks in possibly the Grande Terre Island area where if we fish mid-week,we have that back side pretty much all to our selves.Might opt for Delacroix inside fishing but regardless of where we go will make at least 2-day trip and I do not like livies and found VuDu under cork, sometimes slowly reeled nabs some fine specks,up to 2-3 lbs but not as consistently as live shrimp!!

1/0 kahle is best in my opinion, but the 2/0 is what I use. I find it straightens out less when a big redfish finds my line.

trkdrvr..... 24 leftover fresh live shrimp sounds like a very nice, over stuffed, fried shrimp PO-Boy to me !! Add FF and enjoy.
Only in Louisiana !!

Good call M. Yes they were fried, but they had to be iced to be able to peel easily.

I use a #4 SS Treble Hook.... Success rate goes up, it's small but will bring in a Bull Red... Easy to get the hook out... Tried and proven :)
