This past spring I was fishing down at the Atchafalaya Delta WMA. I caught a few normal size catfish in an area where we sometimes also catch red fish and back drum. Suddenly I had a hard bite and when I set the hook, I knew that I had something really big on. I immediately thought bull red or bull black drum. I had 17 lb test mono, so I did not want to try to horse the fish in any way. When it would run, I would loosen the drag a little and it went on like that for a little while. As it tired, I was able to get it closer to the boat. I got a glimpse of the huge head and then it ran off again. Now I really wanted to get that big thing in, knowing it would be a personal best. I had brought my gaffe along just in a case I hooked up a bull red and now it was time to put it to use. I eased him up along side the boat in gaffe range and it was over. It was a huge catfish that filled up my ice chest. He weighed 18 lbs. To that point, the biggest catfish that I had ever caught on a rod and reel was 13 lbs and that also was at the Delta. My next biggest was maybe 5 lbs. So this one was special.
