Biloxi marsh wma

I am looking to hunt this area this year and would like to know how firm the ground is around the ponds. I have fished all over the Biloxi Marsh but never got out the boat. What I am looking to do is set decoys from the boat then hide it a hundred or so yards up the bank and walk to where I would like to hunt and sit in the grass. Any help would be great just looking to see if this is doable. I will be hunting from a 12 foot flat boat with a 15 horsepower outboard.

Ground so soft u sink to ur nuts in a heartbeat! But if u get on the edge of big water with tall grass and possibly some roso u can walk it, but anywhere around a marsh pond is straight up quick sand. Most guys I see on land bring pallets or 2x12 boards but I hunt out of boat with a boat blind set as low as possible and hunt it like a layout boat due to not much natural cover. Also be prepared to be stopped in the middle of a hunt by lawlf agents they are very knowledgeable of where most people hunt and won't think twice about rolling up to ur pond with a pierouge or there bay boat, I went 2 weekends and was stopped both times at the end of my hunt. The agents were very nice and professional when they approached us, we we're all legal and had everything in order for them so they were really cool with us but they have a big problem with people in surface drives which are prohibited on the WMA and people shooting over there limit of lesser scaulp and hooded merganser which they told us most hunters don't pay attention to the hand book on bag limits. The hunter a few hundred yards from us received a fine for killing 6 scaulp which he thought was legal lol.

Yeah I suspected the ground would be really soft. I do have a small pop-up blind that I can hunt out of. The good thing about a small flat boat is I can push pull it almost like a pirogue. I really appreciate your response and I hope the season is good

usually hunt my lease now however i do enjoy Biloxi and go a few times a year. Just hunt my 23 go devil longtail we go pretty far in the skinny water ive never seen a game warden ever in ten years the area we go. Also very very rarely any other hunters many days you wont even hear another shot even in distance. it be hard to get an outboard in there though the conditions for water would have to be above normal height so as soon as the fronts start rolling forget it.

I don't mind push polling my small flat boat it's about the same as push polling my pirogue. If it would be necessary I have a 55 lb thrust trolling motor that I could use once it gets too shallow for the outboard

All you can do is try and make your own opinion on it if you think its doable

I completely understand. Duck hunter I am definitely going and we'll find out the conditions I was just trying to get an idea of what I might be up against come hunting season since the water levels won't be the same as they are now

For what it is worth,I have heard from a few folks that routinely hunt the Biloxi Marsh WMA and the one constant I have heard is vast area, scout, scout, scout some more and be prepared to have de place basically all to ya lonesome, which might be good, might be detrimental since it helps to have some pressure to keep ducks from rafting up where no one gets a decent chance.I hunt much closer to home and might head down there if my local marsh is either devoid of ducks or over-loaded with hunters and I seriously doubt either scenario will play out. Many, many years ago,I had a lease from the Biloxi Marsh Land Corporation and me and a fishing buddy were comparing notes and his complaint and mine was that when I had my lease, the MRGO was not dammed off, leading to extremely salty water on my entire lease, devoid of grass and devoid of ducks, save for lovely spoonies and some Dos Gris and I hate shooting either of those!!!Fast-forward to now,Biloxi Marsh WMA might be a gem,ya gotta go to know,as some would say!!!

I'm going to scout this weekend and hopefully find some birds. I scouted Pearl River Saturday for 2 hours and only saw about a dozen ducks. I will also be going to scout Big Branch. I checked my cameras and put out fresh corn at my spot in Little Creek Hunting Club this Sunday. Have a few deer on camera and food plot looks nice.

madhook,We are both members of Little Creek Hunt Club and I hunt off Cross Roads near the Fish Hatchery Road gate, close to the pipeline.I need to check my game cam and make sure I did not inadvertently set cam to 'video' mode as opposed to 'still'!!I have a few fishing/hunting buddies that are also members and think I a gonna sneak into Honey Island Swamp this Wed to get a few fat tree rats. From my collection of photos from past few years,I am feeding a small herd of deer!!Good luck out there and perhaps we have met a time or two.The older members of Little Creek always joke about my passion for duck hunting/chasing fish vs boring my head off waiting for my phantom deer!!!

I met you a few times at Big Branch. I hunt off of Cross Road South of you near the pipeline. I moved to Mandeville 8 months ago.

Small world, indeed and I need to get back out to Little Creek asap and do not target squirrels there for obvious reasons and am cautiously optimistic about the duck population in Big Branch.Been extremely busy(good problem)and have not had time to scout Big Branch and usually have plenty of options to hunt out there and typically out-work even the most die-hard of duck hunters(ya got to on Public/Fed land)!!

I went to Big Branch a few weeks ago lots of grass in the ponds didn't seem any ducks. Some areas are really choked up with hyacinth

Grass is pretty thick pretty much in all the areas I typically hunt and hope to get a chance to scout(sometimes scout while chasing redfish)and been too busy to even think about fishing!!!
