First Duck on Youth Day Hunt

This morning I had the opportunity to share the duck blind with a father and his two children. The action was not blazing fast but they each shot a full box of shells and had many opportunities at decoying ducks. We had a great time together shooting ducks and eating a warm deer sausage breakfast in the blind made the time between flocks more enjoyable. Emery and her younger brother Mitchell finished the day with 3 Teal, 2 Greys, and a Mottled Duck. It was Emery’s fist duck hunt ever and her first duck was a drake Mottled Duck. She also added a nice Grey Duck to her first experience in the blind. Mitchell took care of the rest and was nice enough to let his sister shoot first, MOST OF THE TIME! I can tell by his passion for the hunt, and ability to distinguish ducks in the distance, that he will grow into a very good duck hunter. I was an awesome time spending my first hunt of the regular duck season with such a great family. Experiencing Emery’s first duck with her dad and brother was the icing on the cake.

I am hoping that this next front before the weekend sends another push of ducks down to SE Louisiana. I have a couple of weekends and a weekday or two left open for the season. If you want to get in on a good duck hunting experience, I will work my hardest and utilize the many comfortable blinds we have to put you in the right spot.

Good luck to all this season, and as always, stay safe in the water!

Looks like a great youth hunt yawl had, we hunted in south Central Louisiana down in Pecan Island. I took my 15 year old this past Saturday and he shot three, 1 grey, 1 green wing , and 1 spoonbill. He shot almost a box of shells as well. We saw lots of ducks early in the morning mostly teal, Saturday can't get here fast enough.

Thanks Mandy and Slayer, it was a great experience for us all. Don’t think Emery realizes how many hunters chase those mottled ducks for many years before they kill one. That is what many of my out of town hunters hope for when they book a hunt down in SE Louisiana. Little brother Mitchell may have more experience and many more ducks brought to the table but he has yet to kill a Mottled Duck. Emery has bragging rights about that one. He was nice enough to let her shoot first that time and one shot was all she needed. Good luck to all this weekend. Looks like a well timed front will role through Friday!!

Hey Mullet, our hunts were slow this weekend. One problem with having so many blind/location options is sometimes you pick the wrong spot. There are not tons of ducks in our area but the “flyways” the ducks are using were not over me this weekend. I changed locations on Sunday only to learn from other hunters that I should have went back to where we hunted on Saturday. Did not guided hunts opening weekend and tried to take my dad on an easy hunt instead. It didn’t work out as well as I hoped but I learned a lot about the areas the ducks are using to travel. Will be busy with guided trip the rest of the first split and will try to send reports. Good luck to all and stay safe on the water!

Proud Pop,Know how ya feel about out-thinking yaself, think I must be de king of out-thinking myself!!Gonna try some spots this East Zone Opener that have traditionally been full of ducks, just not necessarily at first light but once the shooting scatters em out, they tend to head to secluded ponds(again, hope I aint out-thinking myself)!!Good luck the rest of first split-stuck at my Wal Mart Ponchatoula location til 5 today,Honey Island Swamp tree rat hunting tomorrow with a very generous and kind Medicare Client and hope to bust up some ducks this week end, live for this time of year!!!
