Not good news

I've seen unconfirmed social media reports that a duck hunting boat flipped in the river near Fort Jackson this morning in Plaquemines Parish. Reports are that two have been rescued, but one is missing. Praying for a safe recovery.

One guy is still
Missing. Got back to the launch and the sheriff was going out to drag for him. Very sad. No life jacket. In a mud boat. Be safe.

Re: Not good news
Truly sad and unnecessary. Unfortunately I was on the phone with my son yesterday evening discussing opening morning and the weather conditions. I told him that I wouldn't be surprised if there was an incident with a surface drive crossing the river this morning. Figured it would be between the Jump and Batiste Collette. 25 - 30 MPH north winds on the river is simply not safe for a loaded down surface drive with or without life jackets. I've had my close call with the river down there. It demands common sense, awareness and respect.

Hunted venice this morning out of my 18 foot mudboat. The river was no joke as we were taking 3-4 foot rollers over the front frequently. Sad to hear a fellow hunter lost a life today. Makes us realize how dangerous our sport is.

Anybody have updates to this story? Surprised LAS didn't cover it better.

Re: Not good news
I have not seen any updates. The story was not widely covered. I've seen NO local news coverage. The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office has nothing on their page.

I got the original info from a friend hunting down that way. I saw a news story out of Jackson Mississippi of all places yesterday that said the missing guy fell from a ship, but that his two shipmates swam to shore. It definitely was not a ship but a duck hunting boat. I've posted the info I could find, but is has been difficult to obtain and as far as I know, they are no longer actively searching.

WJTV Jackson, MS
'The United States Coast Guard has dispatched a fleet of response vessels in search of a 27-year-old man who was aboard a ship that sank near Fort Jackson, Louisiana at sunrise Saturday.
Officials say that watch standers at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call for help at 5:41 a.m.
The vessel with three people aboard was “taking on water, near mile marker 20 on the Mississippi River,” a press release said.
The boat sank and two of the three people aboard were able to swim to shore, but the 27-year-old man did not.
His name is not yet known. His shipmates say he was last seen wearing a camouflage jacket.'

Re: Not good news
I have scoured the internet since the event with no success on further information.
A best friend alerted me that there was likely an incident of some sort when he returned to the marina Saturday after their opening morning hunt. When they pulled out from the Jump they could see numerous lights and a flare being shot from upriver. Shortly after daybreak a Coast Guard copter began making passes up and down the river. Seldom a good sign.

Re: Not good news
Almost two weeks now. I haven’t seen anything on news either about the missing hunter from opening day.
