Hopedale Mad House

Reply

This morning at about 3:00 am we pulled up at Hopedale Marina with high hopes for opening morning of duck season. I was with my 5 year old son.

What we found was the owner of Hopedale Marina yelling at everyone pulling up to launch their boats. My 5 year old son was scared to get out of the truck. Anyone who asked him a question, or to further clarify his directions, the owner's response was yelling and screaming, in addition to frantically running around.

It was a horrible experience for me and my son.

I wonder how many people shared the same experience this morning.

Any help on finding another launch close by the area would be appreciated.

Thank you very much

Have launched there many times with no issues. They do have a system there. They want you to make 2 lines on the side of the road get your boat ready and when a spot comes open launch your boat and go park. It actually goes very smooth. If I had to guess people where pulling up in parking lot bypassing the line clogging things up. Doesn't excuse bad behavior though. Campos is left when you cross the bridge.

ducksforD,I used to hunt Hopedale way back in the day when Barry Brechtel owned Hopedale Marina and they had their hoist going and we never had issues like what you described.I personally hate being herded like cattle and hunt Public land and where we hunt,we usually are solo at the launch and definitely solo in the Marsh where we hunt.Looks like folks gave ya other viable options and hope yall get a bunch of ducks and have a much smoother launch. My experience at both Delacroix and Hopedale is somewhat similar to yours, without the yelling, screaming, etc and once Opening Day is over,I bet the crowds thin a tad.I know where we hunt we may see a few hunters Opening Day,if we see any,and after that the crowds thin considerably.Just like Honey Island Swamp for Opening Day of small game season(never hunt it Opening Day)and after that, crowds considerably thinner.I have the luxury of being able to hunt mid-week and those are some glorious hunts, though not many hunters out to keep ducks from rafting, mixed blessing!!

Not sure what happened to rest of my report but what I was trying to convey was the look on Barry Brechtel's face when my fishing partner,a fisherman like I have never before met, extremely successful speck fisherman, said,'Anyone can catch a fish with a fish,we do not need any live bait!'.Hope East Zone Opener goes well and hope these fronts shove a bunch of ducks down here!!

I launch here at Hopedale Marina and Pat, the owner, couldn't be a nicer guy. He has a system that minimizes the wait time for all of his customers trying to launch as quickly as possible so that everyone can make it to their spots on time. A little management goes a long way as those lines in the morning move quickly. I have never heard him speak to anyone is a less than pleasant way. He also runs a boat launch and a bait shop not a tea room. This marina will continue to get my business and I would recommend it to anyone.
