East zone opener

I'm going to meet four buddies in the morning for the east zone opener at King George bayou in maurapas swamp wma. One buddy scouted earlier this week and seen lots of wood ducks at daybreak and the blue wing teal showed up around 7AM. Should be a good shoot, I'm going to start the day with a light modified tube and fast #3's. What is your opening day choke tube and ammo?

The boat launch at the end of king George road is private land just an fyi, I do a little deer hunting back there from time to time. I’ve always wanted to go scout back there for duck holes but didn’t know where to launch. I’ve done a lot of hunting in maurepas swamp and have only killed wood ducks, I did see a blue wing teal out there while squirrel hunting in maurepas swamp a couple weeks ago, would be awesome to go shoot teal and woodies out there. Wish the mallards would come back to that swamp like the glory days I’ve heard about out there.

We hunt close to the hwy 16 parking lot. The area is only about 1/4 mile walk through the swamp east of where you park. Last season there were hunters to our north, possibly near the private launch. I think it helped us out because it kept the ducks flying back and forth the bayou.

I gotcha, well that’s good I’ve never walked the woods behind the hwy 16 launch. Have y’all ever killed anything other than woodies or teal? I always launch at st James boat club when I duck hunt maurepas. This is a pic of a 4 man limit of woodies we killed two years ago out there, went back the next Weekend and the water came up and didn’t kill a bird.

Hooded mergansers are pretty common once December arrives. By then we switch to long range tubes and #2 or #1 steel. Usually we'll get a couple of teal opening day though after the Woodies stop flying.

I use #4's - 1 1/4 ounce loads 3 inch length. I use to use #2's but went to #4's a few years ago and like them better.

Just got some awesome news-my gunsmith got part for trigger mechanism for ole Beretta Extrema, original version, and I absolutely love her,a much heavier version vs the A400,etc but extremely well-built,especially now with Parkerized trigger mechanism and two new pins expertly installed and gunsmith said she fires like brand-new and got her outfitted about two seasons ago with Shadow Grass Blades water-transfer pattern(perfectly matches hunting clothes)and she has Modified Extended Choke tube,Kicks High-Flier and I mostly shoot 3 inch #2's and dat black duck from few seasons ago never knew what hit em!!!Buddy of mine did me huge favor and picked her up on his way home-gonna warm her up soon as I can!!!

Not much action this morning. We seen about 10 ducks and didn't fold any. I only pulled the trigger twice! We're going to hunt some private land tomorrow morning. I didn't hear any shots near us, we needed some wind.

My East Zone Opener in Big Branch was a Big Bust,at least in terms of shooting any ducks, other than the drake blue wing I folded as he zoomed in and had to wait til he cleared dekes to finish him!!!Had great intentions hit spot that was an awesome spot back a few years ago and we exchanged pleasantries with a duck barge group of hunters using big flat with mountains of cover on it!!Messed up big-time by texting another hunting buddy as while I was texting him, nice snow goose suddenly flew well in range, more like too close for comfort!!!My hunting buddies each did not fire a shot and we found relatively low water conditions, guess the persistent NNW winds blew lot of water outta de Marsh.Have no clue what we gonna do tomorrow but hope springs eternal and might luck into some woodies and possibly blue wings.Did see decent amount of blue wings this am and saw very few greys, not a good sign as greys are our bread-n-butter ducks and without them, not whole lot to shoot, except for mallards and mottled ducks and they are not always eager to cooperate!

Second day in Big Branch a tad better than yesterday, though I blew a chance at nice pair of greys(where are the greys we typically see this time of year, especially after some decent fronts).Had Woodie drake invade my space this am and dispatched him pronto and my hunting buddy had some coots with this odd bird mixed in with them, not 100% sure what this is,and quite a bit into our hunt, fine drake mallard starting calling and was responding to both drake and hen mallard calls but I saw him circling about where my hunting buddy,Bayoubob, was hunting solo(quit calling) and I just knew he would get this greenhead and even texted him before he even retrieved duck(saw duck fall before hearing shot!!-he joked about me being psychic!!!).Not much in our local Marsh, hope dat changes soon!!At least I have not scratched either day, though one duck/day poor results and with better shooting, mighta had nice pair of greys to go along with fine drake Woodie!!!Happy Thanksgiving to all and hope to get in some decent mid-week hunts!!!
