I had to make a trip to take care of some things for my step-mom yesterday who lives in Slagel,La where I am also in a lease that my dad ran for 17 years and where I own 25 acres of woods on the edge of that lease. Well on the morning of Nov. 20, I decided to make a quick morning hunt on the lease before heading home. After sitting and seeing nothing but squirrels I decided to walk on my property where my dad killed his last buck on Nov 24, 2012, a really nice 10 point. After getting to the spot where he killed his buck and reflecting on all the hunts he and I shared, I decided to walk a little further on the property. After about 50 yards I stopped to just take it all in and looked behind me and noticed a deer slipping through the dense woods. I could tell it was a really good buck and that he had no clue I was there. I picked a spot where he would cross and when he made it to that spot I rushed a shot and missed. He made about 3 steps and was looking around for where the shot came from. I gathered myself and picked the next spot that he would cross. This time when he stepped into the opening I took my time and the shot hit its mark. The buck ran 20 yards and pilled up. When I walked up on him I couldn’t believe that it was my biggest buck to date. I killed this 10 point (148 inches) within 100 yards of my dads last buck and with the same gun that my dad killed his with. A Remington Model 742 30-6 that he frequently called,”The Meat Getter”! The flood of emotions that came over me in those woods at that moment were overwhelming! I believe that the Lord and my dad were looking over me that day! It is a hunt that I will never forget! I miss my dad so much but it’s moments like this that let me know that he is with me every time I step into those piney woods of Slagel, La!
