2nd Split Opener

Solo Hunt, Lot of folks at the launch this morning, routes to the lease good , heard a reasonable amount of shooting in the area, water levels good, shot 6 teal by 08:00 ( Thank God For Teal!) 5 Blue Wing 1 Green Wing, I'll count my blessings for the 6, not a lot of ducks seen during the hunt or the ride out, water rapidly draining out with the SW and West wind which was blowing at lease 15 to 18, no big ducks seen, very few coot seen. Still a great day to be in a Southeast La marsh.

Made a tactical error, not realizing how strong the WSW winds were at the mouth of Cane Bayou and quickly decided an angry Lady P not be be messed with,at least not today, and by the time we re-launched and navigated our way to second spot,we were a tad late o a pair of mallards that might have come closer had we been totally blinded up but the saw us and veered off, just like a pair of mottled ducks did(how often do mottled ducks decoy like fools-not often)and we will re-convene for tomorrow!

Guess hunting an area fairly consistently over about twenty or so years has taught me there is some predictability to ducks-they tend to head to the most remote,back-breaking areas that receive little to no pressure and dat was what happened today, though our results did not reflect what I saw in a certain, extremely non-pressured area.Larry and I managed to knock down the two greenies that came in together(lost on to Marsh) and had female redhead and Nick got nice drake grey.Larry and I saw enough ducks to keep us enthused and where I hunt not routine, but fairly consistently get nice greenheads.I had a client meeting at 1:30 pm or might have stuck it out and we had a pair of mallards about to soar in right as we were dismantling our pirogue blind!!!Got burned by hen Woodie and gorgeous drake green wing and just retrieving the other greenie I knocked down and taking shots at the ducks that burned us mighta greatly enhanced de take!!!Got nice set of Avian X Topflight greys set for delivery tomorrow and love the spread Larry and I put out and gotta think de Lucky Duck dabbler greenhead helped get pair of greenies to come in like de feet tied to my baitcaster!!!

Hunted Sunday in the Amite river swamp and shot five times for zero ducks. Looks like the Woodies are gone and the hoodies moved in. Yuck!

Duck numbers on the decline in the past five years, according to DU breeding estimates. Time to bring back the 1993-1994 season regs ( 30 day season and a 3 Duck limit). That should weed out thousands of hunters and hopefully put a hurting on the northern states economy.

concretecracks,I would definitely not mind a slight reduction in our bag limits and would hate to see 30 day season but guess the LAWLF Biologists will decide if that drastic a course is needed.Guess the good news is lower than low duck numbers gets folks disinterested and leaves the ducks to de diehards and I almost talked myself into hunting this am,just there was no way feasible for me to get where I needed to be and did see signs of life in extremely remote ponds, just serious reduction in their numbers as well and the woodies from just about a few weeks ago seem to be gone(I hunt near treelines and there should be tons of em in my typical Second Split areas),so not sure what to make of serious lack of ducks where there had been plenty!!
