Pecan island

Reply
We’ll just like everyone else it’s been slow down in Pecan Island. We shot only 7 last weekend in two hunts. But had a great time just being out there ,beautiful sunrise with the moon over the decoys both mornings. Took Proud Popps advice and got a burner for the blind , and man when it’s slow you can’t go wrong with bacon sandwich’s in the blind to pass time. Back at it next weekend. Just for comparing , last year the same weekend we shot 42 . The same type weather just no ducks down right now. To much water up north, cold weather does help but when they have all the water and food they not coming anytime soon.

You hit the nail on the head frogslayer! As long as they have food and water up the flyway the puddle ducks aren't coming! We will ALWAYS have good and bad seasons. I've been hunting since 1966 and remember the 1968 season. 30 days with a 3 duck limit. Ducks were scarce that year in the Reggio area. I was 13 years old and remember being lucky to even get a stinking mottled duck. Our average hunt that season was 3 or 4 ducks a hunt. The next year (1969-70) things turned around 360!
A banner year! So,this season is below par for puddlers here but the divers are in mega force.
It doesn't matter to me. I'm 63 now and will never get tired of cupped wings gliding into the decoys no matter what the specie or limit. It's the thrill of the hunt that keeps us going.

Mike,I agree that cupped wings charges me up but I do my best to refrain from targeting scaup as my wife hates the smell of those divers and I have killed other divers much better suited for table fare, like ring necks and redheads but they are about as scarce as hen's teeth,at least where I hunt.I know pretty much every nook and cranny in the NShore Marsh and there are few ducks of any kind in NShore Marsh(few mallards in certain,secluded,back-breaking ponds)and I woulda thought today with the serious nautical E wind I might see a few greys, mottled ducks, woodies, etc.About the only ducks I saw were a flock of about 8 greys dat musta had their Rolexes on and waited til at least 9:30 to fly and I saw a buffle head on my way back to launch,NADA in my estimation!!Good luck on dem divers, know some Yankees dat love dem blue-bills,I prefer to pass on em and accidentally got one this season, hope my solo for rest of season!!!If Arkansas freezes up,know some mallards potholes but even my typical mallards are gone pecans!!

Thanks for the reply guys good luck this weekend. Looks like lots of rain but I’ll still head to the camp. Check the radar in the morning and go from there. If it’s poring down rain I’m not that mad at em . We got plenty of cold beer and lots of good football games to watch. Just being there is all it’s about.

frogslayer,Agree with ya regarding weather-just got with my boat mechanic and he did receive new powerpack for my outboard, problem is his shop access flooded by about the 8 plus inches of rain our portion of St.Tammany received last night.Probably not gonna have use of my flat but know some decent paddle-in spots, just gotta get way away from whatever die-hards might venture out tomorrow and Sunday.Did see few ducks on yesterday's paddle-in hunt, they chose to fly around 9:30 when my blind was already taken down!!!How dey knows!!!Good luck and I monitor WUnderground religiously and they seem to be spot-on,for the most part!!
