Slow vs fast steel loads

Do y'all shoot fast or slow steel. I've tried it all in various choke tubes with mixed results. But for the last few hunts I used some cheap 1&3/8 oz 3 '.#2 steel and the few birds I do get a shot at dropped dead. I'm using a Kicks modified. I know everyone says speed kills but I'm having fun with these slow loads. I

I have found that #2 steel is much more effective on ducks past 35 yards than smaller shot. I shoot 1550FPS 1 1/8 oz or 1 1/5 oz #2 in a modified choke. smaller shot #4 and #6 is adequate at close range shots in decoys but tends to cripple more on 35yd and farther shots. velocity differences of 100fps or so are probably not significant. size of shot with greater momentum is significant in my opinion.

I like Hevi Steel 3' 2 shot, which is 1.25 oz and 1500 fps. However, I think if you want more range and stopping power, then switch to a full choke. I use the kicks high flyer extended full choke. I have killed birds at 40-50 yards all season with no problems.

I’m not sure what choke I’m using or the speed. All I know is whether I’m right next to the tv screen or laying on my couch 10’ away it seems pretty fast and the spread is consistent. But every now and then, when I do miss that dang dog jumps out the marsh grass to laugh at me.

Gotta play duck hunt on Nintendo since there’s hardly any ducks around. Hopefully next year will be good.

3” magnum #3 1 3/8 either Kent or estate. Best loads I’ve ever shot.
