Bow hunting on WMAs

Looking for some advice/tips on bow hunting Deer/Turkeys in Sherburne WMA. I have some experience w/bow hunting but it?s been about a decade or so. Dad and I used to squirrel hunt Sherburne WMA but I was young buck back then, probably 9yrs old I?d say. Mid 30s now and looking to get back into it. Not looking to steal anyone?s favorite hole or anything, just curious what?s out there. Potential hot spots, or easy trails to hike, accessible areas on foot, etc. For instance 1. Should I pack a pirogue? I realize this would depend on where some good sign is. 2. Are there some areas that it would be necessary to use an ATV? Not easily walkable or accessible on foot. 3. Any decent spots to just hike out to and set up a climber or ground blind set up? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not a Sherburne guy but hunt and have hunted many WMAs with excellent results. Internet scouting isn’t gonna get you what you need. If you are serious start looking at google earth. The key is to find a unbroken section with no trails. Print some maps and highlight about 4 to 8 areas like that. February is an awesome time to go walk and scout these as all sign is there, very few people in woods, it’s cool and you can tote a 22 magnum and get you a few hogs. A good gps and the ability to use it well is worth its weight in gold. February is boots on the ground scouting month if your serious. You find fresh buck sign in February and you have a great spot for next year as you know he survived and he’s gonna be a year bigger.

Yeah my plan is to do some scouting in February to try and find some trails and good deer sign. Appreciate the reply, thanks for the advice!

Here is one tip-launch at Little Alabama Bayou and find some promising areas. Many, many years ago I was extremely fortunate to have a gent from the Lafayette area meet me at Sherburne WMA,launched at Little Alabama Bayou and headed to un-disclosed area that he was generous enough to show me and I ended up shooting a banded jake, probably about 20 years ago.The wild turkey population in Sherburne has taken quite a few hits over the past 20 years or so and not sure if they will ever recover like over 20 years or so ago!!Good luck and hope ya find what ya looking for.I will be submitting for 2019 Wild Turkey Lottery and hope we get selected!!
