Lottery Selection-Sherburne WMA!

Wifey and I hit the Endymion parade yesterday and spent the evening at my mom's in Kenner and we came home to Mandeville today and we were pleasantly surprised to receive our official notifications that we got selected to participate in this year's Sherburne WMA Wild Turkey Lottery!!Hope we get lucky enough to even hear a gobbler as that area has been hard-hit by high water and flooding and I am fairly sure there is a proposal to reduce by one day the turkey season there, already a short season!!!At least the last time we hit Little Alabama Bayou,we caught some nice sac a lait and lakerunners and big perch!!

I used to do the lottery there every year as well but honestly there are very very few turkeys left in Sherburne. They should close the season for several years until they see a rebound in this area. I have hunted here the past 3 seasons with hearing 1 gobble. !0 years ago it was nothing to hear 6-10 gobblers some mornings. That surely isnt the case anymore.

The turkey population doesn't stand a chance of making a comeback due to the feral pig infestation. We have to eradicate the pigs so turkey nesting can take place without eggs being eaten.

Totally agree that something needs to be done about not only the lack of turkeys in Sherburne WMA but also the feral pig population.According to the regs,I should be able to blast a pig or two as WMA's allow feral hog hunts with the same weapons used for whatever season underway at same time and turkey shot should do a number on a pig,at close range. My understanding is that Sherburne WMA was one of the WMA's that had helicopter hog hunting(only LAWLF allowed to participate)and not sure how successful they were and that was at least two-three seasons back. The way I look at it is Wifey and I enjoy being out there and spotting, hearing, spooking a gobbler lagniappe. We intend to fish as well and many years ago,I was fortunate enough to bag a banded jake that weighed about 12 lbs and had a beard almost 3 inches long!!!Perhaps LAWLF can set up hog traps like the one I spotted just last week in Pearl River WMA.I attended last week's Public Opinion Meeting at Ponchatoula High and it does appear that LAWLF gonna shorten by one day the Wild Turkey Season in Sherburne but think that will occur next season.Thank God they listened to public opinion and did NOT reduce teal limits from 6-4!!Pays to voice opposition!!

P.S. Why can't the LAWLF release some wild turkeys out there as I know they band them!!

Quick report on Sherburne Wild Turkey Lottery 2019-Wifey and I got much later start this past Friday and arrived at Value Inn in Livonia way later than we wanted, not a chance of scouting or even fishing Little Alabama Bayou and we slept in Saturday, getting a later launch, hit my favorite stretch of fine Sherburne woods, heard not a thing, except for woodpecker hammering away at a tree-saw fresh hog droppings, were actually probably not too far behind what appeared to be fairly big hog, based upon hoof prints and rooting signs and we called it quits around 11:30,fished Little Alabama Bayou til about 2:45,catching not a fish and we slept in Sunday, based upon the dismal results in both the woods and water!!!Gotta hope LAWLF decides to restock the once-thriving wild turkey population, decimated by flooding and huge herds of feral hogs.Saw not a single hunter and doubt many folks even submit for the Sherburne Lottery.Maybe fishing will get better there and we may return before end of Summer, seeking fine bass!!!
