Big Reds and Sheepshead

Things are really about to pickup with the fishing in Shell Beach, LA. We should be seeing the end of the cold fronts here soon. It’s not that the cold fronts shut down the bite, but the high winds that come with a front make things more challenging.

Lately we have been leaning on the big redfish and the sheepshead to make for a good day. The sheepshead spawn this time of year. I have been locating large spawning schools. It makes for some very fun every cast action. The best thing about catching sheepshead with a guide like myself is, I clean them while you relax at the dock! That’s often people’s biggest complaint about sheepshead- they are hard to clean. Well no worries here, I have plenty years experience cleaning them and will be glad to do it for my clients who want to take some home for a delicious meal.

The big redfish are abundant right now too. They can handle cold water much better than the speckled trout. Their big thick skin and scales protect them from getting too cold, so they continue to feed very well through the winter.

As always I fish with live shrimp from Campo’s Marina in Shell Beach. It’s worth every penny to know I have the best natural bait available.

With Mardi Gras over it’s time to enjoy better crawfish prices and Jazz Fest in New Orleans. If you plan on visiting the city for Jazz Fest, come spend a night at my lodge and make a fishing trip with me. I promise it won’t disappoint.
