Port Sulphur Fishing Safety

Hey y’all,

Buddies and I heading to Port Sulphur this weekend in hopes of catching a few fish and having a good time. A couple of us have good experience saltwater fishing - mostly grand isle. Anything we should know specific to the area to keep us out of trouble? Tides leave you stranded in shallows? Private marsh not well marked? We’ll be in a 16’ and 18’ flat bottom boat with mud motor. Think we’ll be okay to try the bays out as long as we watch the weather closely? Any key landmarks that we should know about for navigational purposes?

Thanks a lot for any advice you may have.

Happy hunting,

in a flatboat with a mudmotor you should be ok. although in some ares in closer to the mines there is s... under the water all over the place. if the weather is decent any of the open bays you should be ok. not much trouble out there. As I stated above if you use a bay boat or a outboard the closer to the mines there stuff all throughout there. A friend of mine was fishing 2 weeks ago. He has over 30 years experience there. He was searching for new stuff to fish said when he looked down while trolling he saw a huge pile of boulders under the water. You have to be carefull in there. Be safe and have fun.

Duckbuster makes a great point, the mines area has submerged crap everywhere. We have fished the area for decades and still occasionally bust a prop or two ... take is slow be safe

Thanks for the responses. We got out there this morning. Pretty slow, but we managed to find a couple spots that got some trout in the boat. Ride back was a little choppy and wind is supposed to pick up, so will be looking for other places this evening.

Happy hunting!
