Desperately looking for a decent place to bank fish in south Louisiana

Hello everyone,

Just a little background. I grew up fishing. I lived all over, but spent several of my pre-teen years ( when I really began to love fishing ) living in south LA, fishing in Lake Verrett, Lake Des Allemands, the Atchafalaya Spillway, Black Bayou, Lake Pontchartrain, etc.

I love fishing in south Louisiana, more than any other place............BUT I don't have a boat right now.

I moved back to the area ( I live in Walker ) several years ago and haven't managed to get a boat. My dad has a boat, but its up on Toledo Bend and with a 55 hour a week job and a 7 month old, I can't drive 4 1/2 hours up to North Toledo Bend every time I want to go fishing.

So, I'm desperately searching for some decent places to bank fish in south Louisiana. There's tons of neighborhood ponds around, but they are all private. I've been to many of the BREC lakes ( University, City Park, Blackwood, Waddell, and others ) but most are highly pressured or have stunted fish. I've gone to False River, but public fishing areas are limited. I even drove to Krotz Springs a few weeks ago because there looked like a bunch of great places to bank fish, but most of them ended up being on hunting leases or on private roads.

I'm going to be off of work this Friday, as well as next Thursday and Friday and am planning to go fishing all three days, but right now I just have no idea where I should go.

Any advice would be extremely helpful. I'm wanting to get some decent fishing in, but I've yet to find a good spot to go.

You may want to try Manchac for some catfish. Get on lower rd old 51 and cross bridge from Middendorfs to south side of channel. There’s some good spots to fish in channel on south side of pass. Some small pieces of smelly shrimp with about a 3/8 oz weight and a long shank perch hook works really well on the blue cats. Use small piece of shrimp and peel it. Bring the family and some turkey necks and they can catch some crabs while you catch some fish. They blue cats bite well but are super slick and a challenge to catch that’s reason for long shank perch hook.
I don?t have a spot but if you are on facebook I recommend you follow the LOUISIANA FISHING GROUP.... Very helpful and friendly group of fisherman...
LA 1 between Leeville and Grand isle. Right side of the road, dead or live shrimp will produce some nice specks and Reds. Specially in winter months. Good luck.
Lafitte has a nice fishing pier next to the fire house just before you get to the end of the road. I have seen some nice catfish, reds, and drum come from that pier. It also has lights for night fishing.
Agree on trying to hit LA 1 in Grand Isle area. Probably gonna have some company and some folks fish sides of road in Hopedale area. Getting yak would definitely give ya some better access and see where Wal Mart has decent yaks for bout $300-350.
