Sportsman's Warehouse Slidell!!

Looks like website issues finally resolved!!!Wanted to send kudos to the fine folks at Sportsman's Warehouse in Slidell.Quite a few years ago,not sure who it was that referred me to Lew's baitcasters, but wanted to send shout-out to him as well as the fine folks at Sportsman's in Slidell.I was formerly sold big-time on Shimano baitcasters but the gent who steered me in the absolute correct direction towards ultra-smooth and well-built Lew's baitcasters made the comment, most likely spot-on,that many guides get sponsored by Shimano and part of their contract requires them to have nothing but Shimano available and I personally had numerous serious bearing issues with quite a few Shimano baitcasters and have since switched allegiance to Lew's and have never looked back.A few days ago,Wifey and I were shopping for some fly-tying supplies at Sportsman's and I noticed one of my all-time favorite Lew's baitcasters was on clearance at Sportsman's and I did not really have the buck$ at the time but just yesterday got nice and welcome surprise in the form of referral bonus from one of the fine marketing agencies I work with and Wifey and I made a return trip to Sportsman's and true-to-form,the salesman at Sportsman's showed me the display reel, went to the back and came out with even nicer reel, same price as the one I looked at($109.99 vs list price of $139.99)and we checked the specs of just about identical reels and the one I walked away with has 8.3/1 retrieve ratio(very fine reel)and up to 20 lbs of max drag and 10 bearings, just like the one I currently have and have used to reduce big reds to whimpering fish begging for mercy!!!My older Lew's has 7.3 or something like that/1 and the higher speed reel gonna be awesome, paired with Lew's baitcasting rod with micro-guides(Amazon Prime $79 free shipping)!!!.Gent who helped me at Sportsman's was extremely nice and did not try to 'up-sell' me and did not have to as the reel I bought was nicer than the display model-go get you some soon, not sure how many they got left!!!Love me some Sportsman's in Slidell.Did joke with salesman about their selection of flies-extremely good prices and I told him not to tell folks my older son and I have tied quite a few salt water flies and son sold bunch this past Sat at Farmer's Market for about four times the price Sportsman's gets!!!Been lotta fun hand-crafting some flashy and durable saltwater flies-can't wait to try some soon and made some sac a lait custom jigheads-gonna try em in Buffalo River when Wifey and I hit Ozarks week of Labor Day!!!

That’s good info on sportsman warehouse, I’ve never been there. Are they locally owned or are they like Academy? I prefer the local small guys like a Gus’s or Puglia’s. The lake should heat up soon!!! Can’t wait

Sportsman's is a franchise, not sure where other stores are located and I love the one in Slidell!!I too patronize both Gus's and Puglia's and also do not forget the fine folks at Chag's in Metairie-not sure if any of them have fly-tying materials and Sportsman's has a ton of materials and kits for fly-tying,something I used to do many years ago and recently got back into, fun hobby and how cool is it to catch fish on lures you hand-crafted!!Need white and blue thead as I am making custom sac a lait jigs similar to the ones I saw at recent Sportsman Show.Have heard some credible reports of fine bass and red catches in Lake but on SShore and I am headed across Lake for yet another Medicare Carrier Meeting and Lake on SShore looking mighty fine might not be bad idea to hit PowerLine Pilings soon for brute reds!

Yeah I think I know the guy you are referring to at the Sportsman (heavy beard, nice fella). He recently steered me in the direction of Daiwa spinning reels as the best bang for the buck on light SW and freshwater use. I used to be a big Shimano guy on spinning gear. I will never buy another one. I switched to Quantum Smoke and this Daiwa. Both are very smooth and do not get the 'tight spots' like all my Shimano unit eventually get.

On baitcasting reels, I still use my old green Curado all the time (best reel every made); but the new Shimano baitcasters are not to be compared. Again, I have switched to Quantum Smoke and Fishing 13 stuff. I know a lot of guys that like the Lew's reels too.

And for those who have never been to the Sportsman's Warehouse; do yourself a favor, go check it out. The place is filled with all quality stuff from knives to sunglasses. Their gun department is second to none on selection. And they will let you look at as many guns as you like without giving you that rude kind feeling. And i will say that their staff is 10X more knowledgeable about their wares than Academy employees.

The only negative thing I will say is that their pricing tends to be a lil on the high end on commodity stuff like HUK, Columbia, etc... But, they do sales all the time too; so just go check them out.

Gadwall,Right Store, not same guy that sold me the Lew's but do know who ya referring to-he ordered me some maps that are not the easiest items to find though Gus stocks them.Their fly-tying selection is as good if not better than Bass Pro's White River section and their folks are very knowledgeable as you pointed out. They offer tons of sales and the clearance items are typically priced extremely competitively!!Wish Mandeville/Covington had one and Wifey and I hitting Pearl,MS Bass Pro next week on our trip to Ozarks(have younger son in Law School at MS College in Jackson.Still hanging on to ole Green Curado and have Second Generation, though not as nice a reel as ole Curado's.Try Lew's sometimes ya just might find them to be better built and lower in price and having 20 lb of drag on reel costing $109 with 10 bearings not an easy feat, trust me!!!Can't wait for Teal Season!!!
