Pearl River Squirrel Hunt

My boy got his 1st squirrel this afternoon on Pearl River WMA. Also his first animal taken with his new 20 ga.
Saw several more throughout the afternoon just couldn't get on them. Going back in the morning. Looking forward to a cool morning. We also walked up on 5 hogs. Got within 40 yards before they spooked.

Last Cast,Love the Honey Island Swamp, but typically only for mid-week hunts or well after Opening Day pressure!!Awesome pic and bet he never forgets his first tree rat!!There are tons of spots to stalk either squirrels or hogs and deer and just this past week hit Big Branch, got two of the 3 squirrels I dropped and got checked by Fed Agent and we exchanged strategies for not only squirrel and deer hunting but also yak fishing!!!Not sure when my next tree rat expedition gonna be but love certain sloughs in Honey Island and that gets one away from trails and off the beaten paths and I have spooked plenty of deer, hogs, and few years ago, wild turkeys!!!Congrats and hope yall get plenty!!!

Back at it today 10/12. Saw more squirrels today than I've seen in a long time. Very windy this morning. My boy only managed to connect on 2 today but not for lack of trying. Just need to work on the whole aiming thing. Also had a 300 lb pig starring us down about 20-25 yards away. He started at us and just that quick stopped then took off. Very intense couple minutes!

Thanks Mandevillian. Felt really good to get back in the woods especially with the timing of the cool front. My boy is hooked on the outdoors, already planning the next trip. I couldn't be happier.

Hope to get after some tree rats possibly as early as Wed(have more than enough on our property in Mandeville, trouble is not legal for me to take em out)!!!No better way to introduce young ones to hunting than stalking tree rats, especially with the ground as doggone dry as it has been!!!Makes it challenging but as you know, key to success is stealth and with rain coming, leaves gonna get plenty wet and stealth gonna be much easier!!!Those Honey Island porkers tend to get plenty big, especially with all dem acorns for them to chow on!!!Keep those fine reports coming,I might hit deer stand Wed pm,after possible tree rat stalking trip that am!!
