Tough day

Went to Reggio yesterday. Planned on fishing the morning then make evening Hunt with my son yesterday for youth weekend. Wind howled all day. Dirty water everywhere only managed one red fish. Ducks almost non existent not only on our property but everywhere we fished. From Reggio marina to lake amadee to the twin pipeline. All day only saw several pair mottles, 5 or 6 teal, handful dos Gris and a migrating flock of a dozen greys. All that was on our property was a few mottled ducks and a single teal and it’s over 1,000 acres in size. Needless to saw we didn’t even bother hunting.

Re: Tough day
Last Cast,If it is any consolation,me and Bayoubob,my usual duck hunt partner, barely caught anything today but did see two huge coot colonies and dat is never a bad sign.Had Nick and I realized the fish were NOT in Lady P and we found zero mullets today where last few weeks the mullets were so thick it was darn-near impossible to cast through them without foul-hooking mullets. We did not see that many big ducks but saw mottled ducks and smattering of teal and the way I typically hunt NShore Marsh,I get as far in the interior as possible and get away from pressure most of the time.Think we messed up today by being hard-headed and sticking to Lady P for far too long!!!Think I may be heading to Venice with a few die-hards as dat is one special place typically incredibly loaded with ducks!!!

Mandevillian, good luck with that Venice hunt. Good friends of mine that have hunted Venice the last 30 to 40 years, say mud motors have ruined duck hunting down there. People running everywhere back and forth all day long never allowing birds to sit in one place.

Re: Tough day
Yep,I too have heard about the ridiculous proliferation of mud boats down in Venice and thankfully, the one and only time I hunted there(probably 7 or so years ago)we heard em running all over but did not see a single mud boat,at least where we hunted. One tactic that should work is to hunt Delta Refuge where they are out-lawed and the other, most likely what we did was to get as far away from crowds using my buddy's bay boat, then we paddled in to nice stand of Roseau canes where we hunkered down.I personally like hunting much closer to home in NShore Marsh where mud boats out-lawed and know just about every square inch of that fine Marsh and with any luck, this may be a year like Katrina-year where we blasted at least 140 ducks and that was hunting Wed,Th,Sat,Sun.That particular year our First Split was more than incredible and the Second Split our success waned of towards the end.It helps to have a compadre that hunts every bit as hard as me and he scouts, scouts, scouts and is scouting Venice right now.Saw coots stacking up locally, never a bad sign and I hope to get back after fish soon, allowing me to not only scope out specks, reds, flounders but check Marsh for migraters.TheWizard7 knows Reggio extensively and has become quite an ally with respect to not only ducks but the St.Bernard Marsh with respect to fishing and duck hunting.I have heard the Biloxi Marsh might be worth exploring, vast and possibly lot less pressure.
