Lackluster opening day in Reggio

Not the greatest in Reggio. Been many many years since my last duck hunt. Small turn out at the marina for opening day compared to years ago. I can remember when you had to show up an hour or so early in the hopes of finding a parking spot. That was certainly not the case Saturday morning. We did see several flocks of grays, 3 or 4 small bands of teal and couple dosgris. That was pretty much it. Nothing seemed remotely interested in landing not only in our spread but anywhere in the surrounding marsh. My son?s first duck hunt and did at least have opportunity to shoot 3 different times at fly bys but wasn?t able to connect. Biggest concern for rest of season is there were no ducks at all that I saw anywhere on the boat ride back in. As if any ducks that were around had no interest in staying.

I made a fishing trip out of Reggio Thursday, traveling from Lake Robin too the lake, going thru Petain , around twin pipe lines all the way back by draw bridge and only seen a band of grays maybe a dozen that were high and headed south, not a duck was seen the rest of the day , I’ve hunted that marsh for many years and now you can’t seem to keep ducks to the area that’s why I gave it up! It’s just a sad state how the Gov. can over look the actions of interest groups up north the take advantage of the laws to profit !! 🧙‍♂️🎣

Thewizard7 it is sad indeed. I guit duck hunting after we moved to the Northshore in 2005. Just wasn’t as convenient making that long drive for a morning duck hunt as it was to head to the deer camp and spend a whole weekend. My son, now 12 hears all my old stories and sees all our pics of fantastic duck hunts throughout the ‘90s into the early 2000’s and wants to experience for himself. Frustrating part of it all is that if you look at the overall population numbers there are more ducks now than we had back then. They just aren’t migrating down like they used to

Just finished cleaning some trout, went back too Reggio this morning only couple duck boats went out, heard couple of shots early that was it , but heard more shooting over in Delacroix , we were fortunate enough to have seen some great duck seasons over the years in Reggio. My son grew up hunting ducks with me before the bottom fell out, he’s lost interest in duck hunting like me , all he does now is fish like me now, I hope that you and your son will get to enjoy many duck hunts in the future Good Luck 🧙‍♂️🎣

Last Cast,If it is any consolation,we had a nice tailgate party for our Abita KC council(Saints really laid an egg today!!!)and I chatted with a fellow Knight who hunted the Pearl yesterday(said he saw more hunters than he saw ducks!!)and all they shot was a handful of coots and two teal.I am planning a mid-week trip to Pearl this Wed(finally getting a slight break in my busy schedule)and hope we at least get a few shots.Have a few buddies that hunt Delacroix, they seem to be doing ok and have a few buddies hunting Venice and dat is de sweet spot,at least currently!!!Frustrates lots of passionate hunters and was optimistic that with the flooding in Mid West either delaying or eliminating crop planting(to be flooded,of course)and with ridiculously frigid weather up N and strong fronts,we may have half a decent duck season.Where I hunt the feed is more than incredible so I am not for a millisecond buying habitat but will say lack of flooded crops up N can't hurt!!!
