Divers on lake P

I drive the causeway everyday and this morning was the 1st time this year that I have seen divers on the Lake. I spotted 5 large rafts of divers probably a 100 or more in each raft. Maybe some birds are finally starting to trickle in. It has been a slow start for me this year.I have come close to limiting twice.

I can remember as a kid during the winter crossing the Twin Spans and there were tens of thousands of divers between the Twin Spans and the Highway 11 bridge. Massive rafts. In fact, a long time ago they used to have a 10 day special Scaup season at the end of the regular duck season on numerous open lakes in Louisiana. Ain't dere no mo!

I bought a new go devil 1644 with a 25 longtail last year and have moved on to hunting other coastal WMAS . I have been having some pretty good hunts this year. I put in a lot of time last year watching the birds to see where they wanted to be and they seem to like the same areas this year.

I also hunt in Arkansas and Mississippi with the few guys that I have met and swap hunts and fishing trips. The hunting in Arkansas at bayou meto And the surrounding rice fields is outstanding . The duck hunting in Mississippi in their Delta area is also hands down better than any hunting here in Louisiana. I spend a week in each of those states every year now .

madhook,I am definitely jealous.Gotta tell ya the guy I chatted with yesterday at Pearl River launch liked the set-up on my Southfork with fine aluminum pirogue rack and made de comment that he liked ole-school hunts like we do and he said he uses his mudboat the right way by NOT driving all over the WMA's and scaring up ducks-we hear lotta shooting from areas basically a tad S and good bit W,fairly easy to somewhat pinpoint via Google Maps and might sneak over that way as much, much easier to be where the ducks want to be vs where we want to be or want to ducks to be where we are!!Good luck and with any decent strong fronts, might just get influx of ducks in plenty Federal/Public areas.Die-hard hunter and I chatted last night about hitting some hard-to-access ponds(dem ducks know how to access em and difficult access yields stellar hunts, often).I read great Delta Waterfowl article regarding Fed/Public hunts and LA has ton of accessible lands!!!Shoot e when ya can!!!

Tomorrow morning should have some wind. Hopefully they'll be flying low.

madhook,Ya probably know this but if not, it is perfectly legal to hunt Lake P anyday of the week,as long as ya not on Fountainbleau property and with a mudboat equipped with a blind,ya gonna have plenty chances at not only divers but possibly mottled ducks and greys and teal, not to mention a few greenies!!!Saw a guy bunch of years ago destroy some divers and he also had some greys and teal in de bag!!!Gonna state de obvious, but scope out Google Maps,ya might find some land-locked ponds not too far from shoreline and intercepting ducks headed to or from those ponds is what helped this gent shoot nice variety of ducks.Good luck!!

I have a friend that moved here from Florida and he has a boat setup for hunting divers. It's a totally different style of hunting one day I am going to try it out with him.

madhook,Ya might wanna get while de getting is good and just this am,spotted at least 500 or more scaup on Lake P,might have to rename her Lake Dos Gris!!!Those Dos Gris might start getting thinned out as lotta hunters struggling,in some areas,to shoot quality ducks like teal and greys!!Good luck with de divers, plenty out there!!

Good luck on the divers, they are fun to shoot. If a bunch comes and you shoot at them hit the call again they might come back for another round. Coastal is closed for us but I am sure some are heading our way. Due to skinny times we are an equal opportunity cut em on all species of ducks these days.

After yesterday's bummer of a hunt, might have to set up boat blind on de ole Southfork and target some dem whistling ducks dat might be foolish enough to stay put with de plastic parade all around us!!!Have only used make-shift boat blind one time and took my older son on Youth Hunt when he was 11 and he makes 32 next year!!!Damn boat blind collapsed just as he was busting up some teal and on our way out of marsh we stopped and he got a widgeon drake and we had a greenhead close enough to shoot but neither of us knew it woulda been 100% legal to blast dat dumb azz greenhead. We did NOT realize Lady P can be hunted all week!!!
