Lagniappe Hen Nuck and Futz NShore 12 1 19

With the nasty WNW winds predicted for Lady P this am,de Nuck and Futz Duck Busters decided a change of venue was in de cards and we separated and hunted different areas.Had three mottled ducks cruise by just at legal shooting time and dey burned me badly but heard shots ring out from hunters decent ways away and did NOT see anything leaving so hope dey connected. Not lotta ducks flying today but did hear plenty shooting, most likely coot shooters.Nuck sent me a text advising dat he got fine drake Woodie and I did NOT fire a shot!!Got disgusted at lack of ducks, headed back and got to Southfork and spotted what looked like dead coot but lucky me-turned out to be fine wood duck hen,not sure the origin but perhaps she landed in thick salvinia and no way was I leaving a prize like dat!!!Sometimes ya gotta make lemonade when ya get dealt lemons!!The other great news, besides getting brand-new Chapman 2-man pirogue with vinyl gunwales for less than half the retail price, was that the gent who sold her to me has nice palmetto tree in his yard and when I met with him yesterday to pick up Chapman,he allowed me to prune 6 huge branches off tree, can't beat them for incredible cover material.Hope to cash in on whatever ducks might make their way down with recent and up-coming fronts.Might just have to start targeting woodies in Bogue Chitto and Pearl River and gotta zig and zag to find shooting opportunities. With a 3-duck limit of woodies, why not target those incredible-tasting ducks!!!

Steelsprayer,Yep it was indeed my lucky day as I did not fire a shot and found hen tucked into thick salvinia right next to flat!!!Hope to sneak in two mid-week hunts, low water gonna be issue but looked at areas I intend to hunt and should have decent access, though most likely gonna have to slug through mud flats and nice yak paddle doubles as reasonable push-pole and the area I hunted had ground hard enough to slowly walk pirogue to blind(Sat hunt, not Sun hunt)!!Like low water hunts, assuming ya can access hunt area as that concentrates ducks into those areas and finding deep channels prior to season opening or at least during season is golden and I have one dem deep channels!!!

My Son in law and I were hunting about 200 yards west of where you parked the Southfork Sunday morning. Two woodies were all we shot at, I shot the hen, but she sailed in the direction of your boat, then dropped. Called it early only to get buzzed by 5 blue wings while picking up dekes. Looked for the hen on the way out but didn’t really expect to find her. Glad you are able to make use of her! Hope things get better, tired of staring at empty skies. Might go take a look in Fritchie this week, used to do well there before they filled in my spot.

JN,Dat is so coincidental dat I would get a reply and you saw de same MT Skies we saw, horrible and I suspected we would struggle and guess all we can hope for is fronts like the ones coming to help replenish the weak showings of ducks,at least locally!!!One of my ole stand-by spots has disappointed me the past 5-7 years and we are hoping for decent results this Wed and Fri and Sat/Sun!!!Might send ya private e-mail so we can possibly compare notes-Fritchie is good choice if ya want some divers and getting tucked into tree-line ponds might just surprise ya.I have not hunted her in while but have shot some good ducks there just gets a tad crowded.Love using Southfork,ole-school style hunting and gets us away from folks that paddle in.Good luck balance of season and how cool is it that now I know who donated fine wood duck hen-hope I can return favor-lost fine greenhead this past Sat but no where near where ya saw my mothership yesterday!!
