duck hunting decoy help

I need some help Im hunting in the forked island area of Louisiana and im trying to narrow down some good decoys to purchase and the proper spread to use them in. Ive been doing some research but have been getting scattered answers. We hunt a shallow open lake, marsh and flooded fields. Do i need to get rid of the mallard decoys? Trying to set myself apart to try and better the hunt im open to all suggestions. Thanks in advance

Re: duck hunting decoy help
Personally I run as big of a spread as I possibly can with as many mojos as possible, I run decoys of all quality some old used decoys to new avian x. That being said when I wood duck hunt I only use up to 6 wood duck decoys and no mojos. The best thing u can do is just go out and give it a try and adjust accordingly to what u see the ducks doing, sometimes a huge spread doesn’t work but when it does the birds work so much easier. Im at that stage where I got a lot of cheap decoys and am starting to see how fast they fall apart so from now on all ima buy is avian x or ghg pro grade. And I hunt all over the state in all conditions but mainly hit wmas and have good success but I’m also the only guy I see that runs a 200+ decoy spread and 4-8 mojos on public land in a 16ft boat lol it’s a lot of work but sometimes has a huge payoff.

The million dollar question!

I've been skunked more than I've limited out. But I honestly don't think it matters. Sounds silly but now you have to be where the ducks want to be. Whether that's scouting or luck of the day.

I now hunt in a pit blind in a rice field with 150-300 dekes of all ages, conditions, and species. About 4 Mojo's. We do ok. Not worth what we pay but it's easy hunting and I'm done fighting pubic land. We try to keep them grouped by species. Space the dekes about 5 ft apart. Two large groups with an opening in front of blind. About 10 steps off the levee. 30 steps to the first robo.

When we hunted crawfish ponds we used very limited dekes. Maybe two and a robo dove. We were just on the X that year. In the marsh we hunted over half dekes half hydrogen peroxide bottles. Back in the day we painted two liter bottles black. If you hunt public land. Look at what other folks have in their boat.

Attached are pics of some successful spreads.

Buy only the best and most expensive decoys. Rig them Texas Style and place them in compartmentalized bags. Bring them with you up north where the ducks are and put them out and hunt..... Success!

Love my Avian X greys and Dakota teal mixed in with Higdon Magnum mallards(right now just one pair)and half dozen of Higdon widgeons and few greys, all Texas-Rigged glad I found that style of stringing decoys-clip dem babies on carabiner and use thick black wire tie and they NEVER get tangled and takes seconds to set em up.I likewise have been more than skunked,so bad dat I am bout to toss in de towel,at least for time-being and concentrate on fishing and deer hunting my private club.So far Federal/Public Land hunts are all I have made and only had one where some inconsiderate hunter(Thanksgiving day,of all days)totally screwed us up and was guy with young kid, should be teaching young hunters the RIGHT way to hunt vs endangering us(shot damn coot on water not that far from us)and in retrospect,I should have paddled up on HIM and made him move.Funny part is he made the comment to us that he was looking for a spot to hunt and saw guys all over Marsh facing each other and what he did totally screwed us as we had flock of four ducks headed straight for us and believe he shot damn coot, flaring our flock like nobody's business.I like the fact that we have tons of Federal/Public Land, just need folks to practice not only COMMON SENSE but courtesy. If I get shined by another hunter, that is NOT the welcome, come paddle over here sign!!!Only happened once in Pearl River and when I got shined, simply paddled over 400 yards away(my idea of far enough away but ideal would be bout 500 yards)!!!Hope to shoot a few tomorrow, got Southfork ready to roll, just need ducks to cooperate!!!

Yep like duckaholic said buy you some decoys and go to texas Kansas or Oklahoma where the duck migration has now been diverted to. but if your like the rest of us and have to hunt in what use to be the best waterfowl action around. Avian X, decoys are good. Didn't care for how squeezable some of them were. Been hunting with G and H decoys for a long time. Have some that are almost 20 years old and still look great and they are very durable. Not sure if everyone will agree to this do not purchase greenhead gear. Paint wears off them in less than a year
