Shiners or jigs? or just maybe live tiny crawfish????

Just a little heads up on fishing for the sacalait , I have done pretty good on a couple of outings and struck out on 2 but on the second strike out I met a guy who was just coming out of a canal which was just one over from where I was in the main bayou....he had 30 of the most prettiest sacs I ever saw all of them were easily over 13 inches and most between 14 to 16, he was not even fishing for them, he was fishing for lakerunners with live crawfish and this is what they were hitting on...he loaded the boat. So, another thought to ponder the mind, so much for shiners and jigs what the heck? small shrimp maybe could do the same???? I saw boats running all over the place and to my knowledge no one had anything in the boat....nothing, except that guy the sacalait king..lmao

Guess tossing Rebel crawfish crankbaits might also be decent idea-have seen lotta folks, though typically later in year, using grass shrimp for both lakerunners and sac a lait and be wiling to be tossing tiny Rebel crawfish crankbaits might yield some chunky slabs, bigger bait, bigger fish typically.Got bunch of fine soft plastics from Lunker City and might try deep-jigging with some of the bigger Grubsters and their Fin-S fish lures rule the roost with respect to predators like rainbow trout, bass, specks, etc.Just starting to get about right on T-Funky and the folks we saw yesterday dat had any fish were deep-jigging,hint,hint!!

Man you are killing me ! Haven’t caught a sacalait in over 14 years, don’t have dem down in St Bernard any more, maybe with all this dam river water we be getting every year it looks like maybe they will come back some day 🧙‍♂️🎣

Anything will hit a lil live crawfish including redfish , stingrays , flounder.....And don't leave out the goo's....A 3/4 to 1 1/2 ' crawfish will outfish anything but a live grass shrimp....I said live...once a grass shrimp dies it turns white....good luck with that....

bullcoon,Thank God I RARELY catch any dem nasty gou's but funny story bout 7-8 years ago was fishing one of my favorite protected coves off Lady P and was using popping cork, had Gou nail whatever soft plastic I had on and the doggone cork popped off and I later spotted it,netted it and had nasty ole Gou hooked and I released de beast. With all the doggone winds and possible low and nasty water, think sac a lait and bass fishing on fertile NShore might be in de cards!!!

P.S. Wiz,if ya wanna chase some T-Funky slabs,Buddy and I most likely will hit her possibly next week,Tu-Th and my days free til end of March then gonna be free most anyday!!!

If that's what the sacs want that's what the sacs get lmao!

Think them sacs a tad deep right now and I fish with a buddy who loves fly fishing and he was using sinking fly line Mardi Gras day and nabbed nice fat female sac(full of eggs)using hand-tied fly, wolly bugger. He and I intend to go back to the T-Funky as often as we can and love mid-week trips with much less pressure on the fish!!

Agreed on the live grass shrimp.....nothing better. Will catch anything that swims and will outfish anything else, hands down. Problem is finding them and then keeping them alive.

Agreed, crawfish too...with the spillway near dipping them is pretty easy with the water up and spring in the air around the corner...with a little battery operated aerated attachment on the cooler better chance of keeping them fresh and alive...in the water as bait they are pretty deadly...

The old lady at Jeanfreau's on Hwy 90 used to sell live grass shrimp. She would scoop them and fill a cat food can flush for $3. Wish it was still as easy and cheap as that.

Not sure why black or black/chartreuse works so well but did get yet another Slab Daddy 9 ft limber jigging pole with neat spin cast reel and gonna pick up one more Slab Daddy jigging pole so older son and I will each have Slab Daddy rigged for deep-jigging and one each rigged with slip-cork. Hoping to hit promising areas this Th just hoping ole Mother Nature does not muck up already stained T-Funky. Know where few dem 3+ lb slabs like to hang out hope we get em worked up on Lunker City soft plastics.

One other thing,de Wiz was kind enough to mention Pursuit Channel and just last night watched awesome show and they mentioned associated website,BrushPileFishing.Com. Very informative show and rarely are minnows or live bait needed for sac a lait. Some purists use nothing more exotic than tube jigs sometimes attaching Crsppie Psychic trailers and Crappie Nibbles to get attention of slabs.

That would be the ticket for a roller coaster for sure!

I tried that crappie lure thing...jigs and trailers yielded nothing....they seem a little slow to on the jigs in the area I am in...they want live shrimp, crawfish or shiners, don't know what the outcome would be with live shrimp but I witnessed what the results were on the live crawfish ....it was a slam dunk.

I am no pro by any means but I have found early on in the pre spawn cold live makes a big difference... Once it warms plain old tube jigs all thats needed....I tried this stuff called pro cure menhaden last summer and got stronger bites....more hookups....When all else has failed I have also nailed them with a 2 to 3 inch piece of earthworm dangling from the hook of a tube jig....
