Great day to be on the water

Went out this morning, water was back up headed too one of my favorite spots when using hard plastic, had plenty of small trout about , funny thing was you had to catch 5 little ones before you had a keeper ! Kept a few for a good friend who ask me for a few for their Friday evening supper, was a very nice day to be on the water till the evil gnawing gnats decided to invite them selfs to snack on me πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈπŸŽ£

Thanks,Wiz,for introducing me to wake baits.Did some networking for CCA NShore Chapter and secured two sponsors on three requests, kinda sounds like ya fishing success.Made my way home to get finishing touches done on huge greenhouse(have to hang front door)and older son and I and possibly grandson gonna seek some T-Funky slabs(so far rain has been non-existent,at least on NShore)and got two fine Slab Daddy jigging poles set with Lunker City incredible jig heads(might tinker with them to make weed guards on em,no need to mess with their incredible anchor system, second to NONE)and hope deep-jigging yields some lunker slabs!!!Gonna check calendar to see which day(s)might work out for salt water trip but til end of March, got two of five week days booked with Medicare Clientele and needs money for fi$hing trips!!!

Great pics, thanks for posting! Done also seen couple of areas still with mainly baby trout, guess that's good for the future, just feel guilty going into those areas and seeing dem undersized trout that don't survive floating belly up in the water. But dem baby trout did keep my eight year old entertained till we moved on!

FlatBoatFred : In regards to smaller trout that I happen to catch like all fish that i do release I take the upmost care in removing hooks , I refuse to use a J-hook being that first I don’t use any bait what so ever, by using a J-hook the odds are the fish will swallow the bait ( shrimp, cut bait or live minnow ) thus being gut hooked which is death sentence to that fish, l very seldom have had a fish inhale a artificial bait , mostly they are hooked on the edge of the mouth area , I just wanted to let you know I do the up most to release them safely πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈπŸŽ£

Good information on why there would be a better survival rate on trout when hooked with artificial bait.

Not a problem with properly rigged live bait either. Kahle hooks or circle hooks, and properly handling and knowing how to remove a hook go a long long way towards released trout survival rates. With these hooks it more a easy rolling it out on the mouth than a yanking motion I see a lot of people do. This is why I insist on handling all fish that come into my boat.

Thanks for mentioning those type hooks Capt Rory , hope that some fishermen will use them , instead of J hooks πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈπŸŽ£

Yep,kahle hooks do seem to nab specks right in corner of mouth, making catch-and-release easy.I rarely use live bait but have used Berkley Gulps hooked on kahle hooks or Vudu under cork and relatively easy to extract hook that is only hooked in mouth.

Forgot to add, I hate treble hooks for fishing with bait. They generally only hook into loose flesh in the mouth and often pull out, or get swallowed deep. They should only be allowed on crank baits.

Capt Rory,Treble hooks should be re-named Trouble Hooks!!!

P.S. Lotta places in Arkansas require only barb-less hooks or single hook and it likewise has to be barb-less!!

Re: Great day to be on the water
Caught many fish on barb-less hooks. I will often bend the barbs down this time of year, especially when on a hot sheepshead bite as it makes unhooking and getting back in action much easier and faster. So what if one gets away here and there. You can't catch them all, but sure as hell can try too.

I went out Sunday morning but it didn’t make a post , after my last trip when I got home, went into my shed and took out my box of barbless treble hooks putting dem on a couple of my painted twitch baits and wake baits, the ratio was about even on my hook ups , but still was a blast to play with the trout, all I had to do was give them a little slack and off they went too fight another day with out ever taking dem out of the water πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈπŸŽ£
