No Stinking Bait Required(Other than for crab nets)5 11 2020

Did my usual pre-trip check of predicted winds and tidal movement and got an early start, launched at one of my current favorite jumping-off spots for Bayou Lacombe trips,Main St.,and there were zero tow vehicles, not necessarily a surprise since I was quite early.Love the tranquility of Bayou Lacombe and many, many years ago used to call on Thibodaux Family Practice Clinic and they had a camp on Bayou Lacombe called Tramuraii(not sure if I got spelling correct but it translates into Tranquility)!!!Moseyed on down to mouth of Bayou Lacombe, found Lady P slick as glass, not un-expected as we had NE winds, perfect conditions, assuming I could find some decent water and reds not overly picky about water conditions!!!Tried setting 17 crab nets in protected cove, saw plenty gators, and checked nets at least one full course before embarking upon sight/blind casting for reds in lush grassbeds.Did not take too long before red#1 hit box,20 inch beauty, followed up by 4 more but took a while.Think by 11 I had 4 keepers and had caught and released at least 9 or so more and was searching for red#5,only because I had promised a few folks some fully-cleaned reds and by 1:00 pm dropped red#5 into box to go along with a whopping 4 crabs that I luckily caught.Gator grabbed one of my nets, saw him from a distance chow on bright orange mega pool noodle(great idea for crab net floats, inexpensive and dem babies work).Had a blast and actually sight-casted to at least 4 reds, spotted at least 3 stingrays and tried,in vain,to entice pre-historic black drum to bite Jann's Netcraft spinnerbait(all reds caught today inhaled fine lure easily put together from kit).Spooked a few reds, always seems to happen, and finally missed a red dat grabbed Jann's Netcraft spinnerbait, think I was sore-armed from making so many long casts and he may have smashed bait with tad slack line, unfortunately!!!Great day to be on water, chatted with a few folks at Main St Launch and not sure where dem crabbies were today, guess I caught bulk of em last Mon with Wifey,Ultra-gratifying to nab reds or ANY fish for that matter, with a lure I made myself. Can't wait to get into custom pouring swimbaits dat CAN'T be bought locally. My thing about live bait is pain in rear keeping alive,I typically catch tons of trash fish with live bait and lot more gratifying to catch fish with spinnerbait,hard/soft plastic.Like my tremendous fishing mentor used to pound into my head,'Anyone can catch a fish with a fish!!!'Quite simple, love finesse fishing and live/dead bait fishing NOT finesse fishing!!!Got plenty more out there, headed back for Round #2 tomorrow with even better tidal movement and E winds to clean up water, hope to replicate results from today and if I do not,not a big deal!!!

Nice limit of Reds there Mande! Especially on hand made artificial lure! Got to be very gratifying! I’m up here at duck camp in Arkansas cutting grass and getting prepared for upcoming duck/goose season. Farmers up here in southeast Arkansas are discing and planting beans, rice and corn now, after being delayed for several weeks due to extremely wet fields from all the late winter, early spring rains. Caught a mess of channel cats on Lake Chicot yesterday evening, made a fine fish fry last night. I will be back on Thursday and would like to go chase some of those Reds with you!

GB3,Sounds like a solid plan and just finished writing stinkeroo of report for today but dats fishing for ya!!Gonna get exact Jann's spinnerbait and they are offering free spinner blade kit with my next order. They have great stuff for the DIY folks like me and dat doggone spinnerbait looks like some piranahas attacked it.Hard to fathom how worked-up those reds get over a hunk of lead with ugly skirt and two Colorado blades spinning up a storm.Think the vibration of two blades gets em worked up and the leadhead looks like minnow dey CAN'T resist.Lets definitely SMASH some reds soon!!!Released two yesterday dat will no doubt be keepers in probably less than a month and saw beast, probably well over 36 inches long.Today totally different set of water conditions and un-favorable winds!!!Joked with John C bout de local lure folks starting to make their own line of spinnerbaits and would NOT be surprised!!!Go out and get u SUM!!!

Nice work on those reds. Man those tree duck have exploded in the area over the last decade or so. There are times they are on the canal banks along West Napoleon near the park by the hundreds, and see them all the time in the neighborhood in trees.

Capt Rory,Thanks been extremely gratifying and SO close to home. Hope to shoot a tree duck this coming duck season. Saw a flock of well over 40 sitting on finely manicured lawn of Bayou Lacombe mansion.
