Slot Red Funk

For the past month and a half I just can’t seem to catch any slot reds. On this trip I was back in Delacroix to explore some deeper holes that I had heard about. I even brought my depth finder (which is useless in Delacroix) since I made a route to the spots I wanted to fish. When I got to the holes, the water was very dirty, stagnant and not as deep as expected. There was nothing but gar hanging out.
I soon switched over to plan B: work the edges of grass beds with a weed less Texas Roach and an in line spinner. I wound up pulling in 7 reds in the 15-19” range. I also temporarily hooked a couple that might have been in the 20-23” range but they quickly threw the hook back at me. Nonetheless it was still a fun trip and hopefully I will start catching a few slots soon.

Here’s a few highlights and lowlights.

I don’t know what to tell you, I rarely catch a red at Delacroix under 22-23”. Most are 24-29”. Spots like lake Lery, Grand Lake, Lake Batola and pretty much anywhere between launch and Lake Campo will have 20-30” reds. On low tides they usually pull out the shallows and go to slightly deeper water. Everyone me included is catching easy limits just about everywhere right now. Tropical storm Crystobal brought in better water on both sides of ship channel along with tons of reds. Try running till you see some good clear water with cleaner bank and not so much snot grass. Fish the marsh edge with some kind of spinner with shad color body or weedless secret spoon. Fish slightly deeper edges with clear water. They are there.

Ditto bigjim. I agree 100% with what you are saying as that is what I usually experience. I just can't seem to find any right now. I guess that means I will have to go fishing more!

Got new Do-It Mold to make my own spinnerbaits and got the extra-heavy stainless wire with complete circle vs R bend wires-gonna pour a few for CCAguns and I to toss on future Chef area bass/red outings

blackfishmatt : Might wanna try a wake bait, been doing good with them up and down bayou Robin all the way back too Reggio launch, try mullet or sexy shad , run wake bait right along grass lines , last week I caught 9 reds all slots . Good Luck 🧙‍♂️🎣

blackfishmatt : I use the Academy H2O wake baits in mullet and chicken on a chain , those are in the salt water section, go over too the fresh water section and look for the H2O wake baits in sexy shad and the black back gold sides , you will need to change the treble hooks on them to a stronger set Good Luck. 🧙‍♂️🎣

Thanks wizard- I'll check them out. I have had some success with the baby minus one in the fire tiger color.
