Kudos to 5 Star Marine Rebuilt Power Trim 50 Johnson

Gotta send nice shout-out to the fine folks at 5 Star Marine as I had issues with the powertrim unit(rebuilt probably 8 years ago)and I decided to tackle the fun chore of rebuilding unit, using not only a kit from them but also fine brass cap for hydraulic cylinder(doggone last shop that rebuilt unit apparently did NOT have spanner wrench to remove and tighten cap)and my older son and I had NO choice but to put de Gorilla grip on cap plus use pin punch(never good idea but only choice as holes were bunged up tremendously)!!!Took some doing but with the assistance of few You Tube videos plus mechanical know-how and ingenuity(had to use serious pipe vise to get nuts started on stainless lower pin-now I know WHY many mechanics do NOT rebuild power trim units). We never were able to extract upper pin but that was not necessary as we had more than enough room to tackle rebuild from underside.Wifey and I got unit re-installed after I reassembled piston assembly and replaced a few O-rings and the brass cap from 5 Star Marine really is nice touch, after I painted unit with nice enamel paint, after zinc primer and this unit should last long time!!Attaching pics to show folks how nice unit looks and might tackle chore of sanding, priming, painting engine to have her match fine powertrim unit!!

Mandevillian, probably saved about $400 tackling job myself!!

Thanks,Wiz,been quite a job but the greatest satisfaction was getting it right the first time and we did doubt ourselves til we got all the air outta system and with new O-rings and seals on cap, mighta taken extra time to thoroughly purge air outta system.Ya right, next chore needs to be painting ole motor and gonna take my time priming lower unit and masking off decals, etc.O'Reillys is where I found pretty good white enamel and brother-in-law who owns body and fender shop in Holden certainly very capable of shooting fine acrylic enamel on motor but I do not mind shooting engine with spray bombs just like I shot power trim unit.Might tackle dat fun job tomorrow and Wed,CCAguns and I most likely gonna hit T-Funky,might see if he will use de Miss Kitti so I can let paint cure.Ole SouthFork running better than when I first purchased her and power trim working as good,if not better, than when I had unit installed.Brass cap really dresses her us nicely and Wifey and I had neat trick to get cap installed and tightened(she slowly rotated power trim while I held spanner wrench and breaker bar stationary til it was snug, then I torqued dat cap down very tight-not a leak anywhere!!!)

Mandevillian, next project replacing broken steering gear box in ole Kubota!

Wiz,Thanks for sending link for decals.Wifey and I went to lunch, saw Dane and his wife and grandson and I did a search and found exact replica of Johnson decals for SouthFork-ordered a set and gonna use heat n strip gun to carefully remove ole decals, wipe down glue residue and scrub and roughen surface to get primer and paint to stick and next time ya see de ole gal,ya aint gonna recognize her!Truth be told, side decals still in excellent shape, one on rear of motor cover looking mighty ole-gonna replace em all and paint entire motor, cover, lower unit, transom bracket and she gonna look as well as she operates.Just checked on power trim rebuild and seems like I did de deed and she raises and lowers better than before and dat brass hydraulic cylinder cap really dresses her up.Ole Bayoubob aint gonna recognize de ole gal and he might end up going to wrong boat next time we gets together!!Think Dane and I might be fishing this Th with his son joining he and I on Dane's boat and CCAguns should be a-fishing together tomorrow.

Nice job Mande. Wife and I went out of Bayou Lacombe on Friday evening to check crab traps. I noticed at Main Street launch that trim sounded weak lowering the Yamaha 115 4 stroke into position. Not long after getting up on plane there was no response when I hit trim tab to trim motor. I knew then my trim was out and motor stuck in down position. Once back at launch, with ice chest full of fat crabs, I was able to tap on trim motor and it had one last gasp and I was able to get er up! Luckily it was only brushes in trim motor Giving me my problem and the Alumacraft 2072 is ready to ride again! Crab traps baited up and ready to run again!
