There are reports over the past couple of months of a bear or bears in St. Helena Parish. A hunting camp near Pumping Station Road, LA 10, Grangeville, Pine Grove and Montpelier. One of pics shows a male and males have territories of up to 60-80 miles. The facebook group 'Area four hunters' has reports and photos.

If you hunt or have a camp in this area keep an eye out! Black bears in Louisiana came off the endangered list a few years ago and are protected. WLF has tips for campsites and hunters on their website.

Wow! Who would have thought. I belonged to Circle Swamp Hunting Club in that area 20 years ago, doubt a bear would be interested in a pine plantation, they probably they near the Amite River.

Ozarks loaded up with black bears and have heard Atchafalaya Swamp likewise has healthy black bear population.Wifey and I just returned from short but incredible Ozarks annual trip and I chatted with craftsman at the Ozark Folk Center who fashions hand-crafted longbows and he advised that his hunting spots loaded up with black bears.Guess if Wifey and I decide to take overnight Buffalo River canoe trip might be careful with making sure to do our best to bear-proof campsite!!!
